Breathers...Includes a how to DIY.

i tryed today to drop the rear diff i un did the nuts but the bolt wouldn't come out, can anyone help?
Jason, I used a stud puller socket (I think thats what it's called)
If you can't get hold of one of these, try putting 2x nuts on the bolt :iconwink:
Then by turning the 1st nut only (inside one) you should be able to undo the bolt that way :) As the outside nut acts as a lock :)

Hope this helps.

Nice drive this time of year- you can do it in a week without pushing, although I have heard of it being done in under 30 hours with 2 drivers pretty much non stop

look the eaisest sollution is to just pop on over to Sydney and have Damo do it for you.:poke:
I'd be in that. :)
It would have to be an overnighter though, as it might be a little too far for a day trip.

No hammers!

Unscrew it using the 2 nuts per Damian's post. Then screw it back in when you're done

I should have mentioned this earlier too.
When putting the bolts back in, you may want to use a jack to lift the diff & hold it in place. Not that it's needed, but it does make it a lot easier, especially if you're doing it by yourself. :iconwink:

thanks guys did it thismorning it tokk me about 30 mins max (had to wait for silicon todry which was the longest part hahah. yer used a jack to like the diff back up.
thanks for all your help

Ok then, as I said in an earlier post, If you undo the 2 nuts & take the 2 bolts out from the diff that hold it into the sub frame, you will have more room to pop it back into place. In doing this the diff will hang a little lower with the axels resting on the exhaust pipe.

I just popped the rear breather cap off & drilled it out. It is either 8mm or 9mm

I then used some tubing with the same outside diameter & jammed it in untill it was about half way into the breather cap.

Then the tricky part...trying to get the breather cap back into the diff.
Just persevere with it, it just pushesback in (does not screw in)

Once this is done, just run the tubing to wherever you want to.
I ran mine up into the RHS strut cavity via the existing hole in the floor (on RHS of spare wheel well) & up into the rear quarter panel.

I hope that with the included pics, it now makes more sense.

This is an extremely helpful contribution. I'll give this a go very soon, as I think I'll be driving in and out of the Wimmera river in a few weeks.

Has anyone got any tips on doing the front breather?

Front breathers are easy - on my auto there are 2 short breather tubes on the "bell housing"; just get longer tubing and extend them up to the firewall; allow for a small loop at the end and then plug on a cheap paper fuel filter to keep the dust out. The manual is a different set-up; breathes through the dipstick I believe.

Through the dipstick?

Would have thought that dipstick was to sump, and the diff was a completely different oil reservoir .

I must get myself a CD of the service manual.

Yes that's correct. :iconwink:
The dipstick acts as a breather for both the front diff & manual gearbox.

The dipstick is located towards the back of the engine bay near the fire wall. Since the dipstick is up fairly high I haven't really worried about doing the front breathers on mine.......yet :)

Front and centre diffs share the same oil as the gearbox. The centre diff being at the very end of the box, the front diff is at the front- obvious I guess as that is where the front driveshafts come out of. Manual gearboxes have no sump as such. Not in the way autos and engines do. The oil just pools at the bottom of the housing and with rare exceptions has no internal pump & pick up, like autos and engines do.

Ok. 2 more questions:

1. what's the best tubing to use?
2. where do you get it?

I got mine from a place that sells hydraulic hoses & tubing. Just tell them what you want it for & they'll be able to supply you with the right type of tubing. :iconwink:
It was only about $3 or $4 a metre. :)

Thanks. Sounds like enzed or someone like that would be the go. Was hoping to do the job tomorrow: maybe supercheap auto have something that will do the job. If not, I'll do it during the week.

Then the tricky part...trying to get the breather cap back into the diff.

I agree strongly with this. Spent about two hours trying to do it and gave up because I have to be somewhere.

It will have to wait until cup day to finish it.

Unfortunately, while under the vehicle, I notice fluid leaking fro RH rear strut: it was only just out of warranty when I replaced it, and now this one has gone just over 3 years since it was put in . Car has only done 40,000 ks since it went in, and has only done 90,00 ks overall. I will be having stern words with Subaru about this.

Left hand strut has also been replaced at my expense.

Will be pissing off the self levelers in favor of stronger springs.

Yes it is a b!tch to put back in :furious: especially with the tube now in it. :yell:
I also spent a couple of hours at first too :bcool: But once I took the bolts out & let the diff hang down a little, it was a lot lot easier. :iconwink:
