drive shaft popping out

I cant comment on which one to get, I'll leave that to others with experience in this

Only that I would suggest getting a good one even if its costs a bit more. The few $$$ you might save would quickly be lost with another trip to the mechanic, not to mention all the aggro... Don't get sucked into a false economy :shake:

called repco that said $390 each :surprised:
there is no CV specialist near me unless i travel to melbourne :(
so i called a few wreckers ad they were about $88 each and apparently there is two types of drive shafts that were used. one which is male ended at both ends also when i called repco that asked whether it was a SG9 or SGK. can anyone shed some light

You're in Gippsland? Anywhere near Bairnsdale? They'd be sure to have someone. & you study in Ballarat, can't believe they dont hace a CV joint either

This is for your SF Foz? So it wont be SG....

Whats your VIN? I'll see if I can find anything...

nope this is for our SG forester.
there was a place in ballarat i was taking it to, but no longer live there

i have been on the phone all day to some diff specialist and subaru as well. my best option is to replace the whole diff as its VERY unlikely the drive shaft is the issue

This refers to the description at the start of the VIN Number. e.g. My 2006 SG VIN starts with "JF2SG9KK" ... etc

You could always try our usual mechanic, Ross Hallett on (03) 9551-2402 at 63 Kingston Rd, Heatherton.

He is extremely experienced, does an exceptionally good job (never had to take anything back to him; not ever ... ), and is very reasonable in his pricing. We have used his services for something over 12 years now. Tell him the guy with two "new" Subaru Foresters who used to own a white Impreza hatch recommended him. He will know who you mean ...

Or send me an email and we can talk ...

Oh bugger :(
I hate to think what Subaru quoted

Yeah its cool how they do that...mine starts JF2SF5...I wonder what the JF2 means.

A good, honest mechanic who knows his stuff is like gold, one who only does what is necessary & does it well at reasonable rates. I know a great guy for anything LPG...he's done a great job for me several times.

I have noted down his No. for when I need my Tbelt done :iconwink:

thats ratbag i will keep that in mind.
so far i have been talking to my mechanic (also my uncle) and he said the same thing as subaru a second diff is the best option, so i will just be keeping my eye out. i have called all the wreckers in gippsland (just about) and the major Japanese wreckers in Melbourne and only mordialloc had one which he said was going to be about $600

Its a 4.44 diff...I think yours would be 4.11 but Im not sure. It may say it on the back of the diff, or perhaps someone else can say.

Or just call Subaru. They can tell you just from your VIN :iconwink:

Any more news Thunder?

I just called my dealership & the spare parts guy said he cant check my diff ratio using the VIN...I thought they kept complete build details & could access that through the VIN?

Anyway, the poor spare parts guy, who is prob getting sick of me by now lol, said he would find out & call me back...

A few hours later he did & said its 4.111 if my SF is a manual. I asked if there's any way to be sure & he said it will have "T2" on the diff for a manual, if auto "VAIRSS-XH" & be 4.44. Time to clean the muck off the diff & look. If I cant see anything then I'll jack the car up & turn the driveshaft & count the turns of the wheels (thx Pezimm). But I was pretty sure it was 4.111 so was the dealer...

J= Japan - Country of manufacture
F=Fuji Heavy Industries - ie Subaru
2=Model / Body designation - ie Forester

We have a 2005 Impreza, it starts JF1GG9...

1= Impreza.

Also have 2 x L-Series that are JF2AN5...

Here the 2 means L-Series. Since they were not made when the Forester came out, you need to know the whole VIN to decode year, etc.

I just replaced the front CV's with complete new ones made by promax for $110 each from super cheap auto. They look and seem to be build better than the oem's that I took out, good warranty on them too.

Thanks for that link Kevin.

I was trying to remember all the postion meanings, but havent had to do it for about 6 or 7 years. I used to have to decode VIN for american SUV's at previous work location.

Ususally H2 Hummers, Chev's, GMC's, Dodges, and the likes.

well i got a 2nd hand diff for mordy auto is melbourne. $550 delivered was a bit pricey but i hear they are good to deal with if you have issues with the product.

i installed the diff yesturday, hardest part of the job was trying to hold it in place to do the first few bolts on.

have done about 150km now with the new diff and put it through some flex and so far so good! :monkeydance: the drive shafts are staying in and the diff has no whine.
i hope for the sack of my sanity this continues!

i took the side covers off the old diff to have a quick look and me and the mechanic could not see any issues  would imagine if we took it fully apart we would find something wrong but ran out of time.

Good on ya for going all out to get it sorted. I'd have set fire to it by this stage.

Hopefully this is it sorted for good.
