We've done 3 trips with a std hitch now and it's always worth lubing the ball regularly, keeping it capped when not in use and adjusting out any slack. We never have knocking.
The next hitch up in the design stakes is the Hyland hitch which is a cup for a std ball that allows more rotation. Bit like a uni joint from memory.
