So I just put a radio in my car. Its just a cheap CB that a friend had given me. He also gave me an antenna, but I'm unsure of how to mount it...I really don't see a way I can mount it, so I'm shopping for a new antenna.

Can anyone give me any pointers? Pics of how you have your antennas mounted would be great. While browsing the web, one that caught my eye was a window mounted one....but it was pretty small. I want an antenna that can carry distance pretty good.

Anyways...here are pics of the radio and the bracket I made to mount it.

When I was shopping for my antenna I was steered towards the fibreglass as I was told the steel ones can fatigue over corrigations. Mine is mounted on the roo bar.

I use an external windscreen mount. You could use a Z bracket, mounted between the front guard and bonnet. I did not find one deep enough- you might have more luck, or make your own perhaps.

i cant say i have personally tested out my radio while on corrugation, so i will have to test it next time. but from the limited use i have used it it has been clear on both ends over a distance of about 10km (have not tested it any further).
i was recommended the aerial i have by a radio expert so i assume he knew what he was talking about, but like i said i have not tried it on rough corrugated road

I have mine mounted to my bullbar. It's a 6' whip & 6dB.
I find it works very well.
I know of a few people that have theirs mounted to the front guard with a zed bracket with good results.

Instead of trying to explain the difference between a 3dB, 6dB & 9dB antenna I'll let the following pics do it instead.

A Steely Dan perhaps!

Mine is on the bullbar. Prior to that and with a bit of fiddling I installed a threaded shaft (that matched the antenna) down through the bonnet / hood hinge plastic cap just in front of the windscreen and connected with nuts to the rear of the hinge bracket; then screwed the antenna onto the threaded shaft.

Kevin,

Mounting the antenna on the hood hinge sounds like it would be neat.

When you had the antenna attached to the hinges of the hood could you open the hood without fouling the antenna? Also when driving at speed did the antenna bend back and bash against the car?

Got any pics of how you did that?

Thanks

Made the mount for mine. It was a magnet mount antenna...but the base was all screwed up so I had to modify it. It seems to be working, but I don't have another radio that I can do a controlled test of distace/clarity with.

Whats great about this mount is it does not interfere with opening / closing the hood at all.

Here are a few pics. I'm doing this at work so I'm working on it a bit here and there when I have a few minutes to spare....All I have left to do is run the cable to the radio and I'll be done...

Hey nipper. I didnt know you were on here....

I'm broknindarkagain. I've talked to you on subaruoutback before.

Well I gave my radio its first road test. I had some concerns about the mount because its made from thin aluminum and was fairly easy to bend into shape...I was worried that as soon as highway speed wind hit it, it would bend. It seemed pretty stable for the 15 mile drive home.

I was picking up a signal from someone that said they were about 30 miles from me....so things seem to be working great. I still need to tune the antenna though.

For the record, people talk about some weird **** over CB. I was listening to people talk about other people by their "username" and asking what happened to them....there seemed to be an entire group of people on channel 1 that all knew each other and were on opposite ends of the valley.

Was that going through a repeater station?

What frequency are you using?
