MY06-07 Autos thin on the ground

Well, Folks

No upside to this ...

The Camry was serviced today.

The oil leak?
What oil leak?
There are three of them -

  • main crankshaft seal and bell housing seal;
  • distributor;
  • oil pump ...

Engine repairs will cost $1300~1500 alone. Money straight down the drain, that will not increase the trade in value one single cent!

All the external drive belts are cracked ...
The brake pads need changing at the next service (10,000 Kms away).

It will be residing at a car yard well before then ... :( :(

Bugger!

that'll teach ya for buying a toyota! :rotfl:

but seriously not good news :(

Gidday Thunder

that'll teach ya for buying a toyota! :rotfl:

Lol.
But come on now, it's nearly older than you are ... :rotfl:

but seriously not good news :(

No, it's not. $500~1000 maybe OK, but by the time it's all finished, there would be little change from two grand, I reckon.

I intended to turn it over at the end of last year, but life is what happens while we are planning other things :raspberry:!

Wow, that is expensive.

Subaru's are just as expensive Thunder! Believe me, I've poured thousands into my Forester for both major and minor work.

With my engine though I think I will just buy another long block with 150-200k km on it and swap it over rather than fixing my rings and seals. It would probably be cheaper and quicker to do (could be done in a day vs a week or 2).
The cost in labour with excersices like this is the real killer! Plus now the possibility of my engine having done an headgasket too. I did 'an El_Freddo'. lol
I turned off my rad fan switch yesterday for the water crossings and forgot to turn them back on. Left the car for a few mins, got back, jumped in, noticed temp guage and it's just below the red!!!!! :( Turned them on and opened bonnet. temp went back to normal in less than a minute.

If your just going to trade the camry in wouldnt ya just leave all the stuff thats wrong with it, seems like a waste of money IMO hey..

Ouch !!
I know you knew you had an oil leak, but I'm guessing you didn't think it was going to be that bad & costly to fix.

Tha's my plan. There are also lots of other things that you would know only too well in an 18 y.o. car. Time to trade it in, pay the dealer's premium, and hope to get a reasonable changeover figure to a car with around 60~80K Kms and 4~6 y.o. Preferably around the $20~22K mark.

Ouch !!

I had my suspicions that it was not going to be a doddle ... But hope springs eternal; just wasn't to be in this case.

It appears that the '94 Camry donk is plain ugly to get out and in - around $1200 worth of ugly ...

How it is currently will make absolutely no difference to what the dealer will offer (next to nothing ... probably around $2K), so the next part is to find a good deal, as I did with the swap of Roo1 for Roo2. Got next to nothing for Roo1, but a bloody good deal on Roo2 ... So it all came out in the wash, in the end.

Start looking in earnest tomorrow.

Sorry Taz, left you out of my reply ...

Spot on mate. The parts cost very little, the labour is the killer. Can't expect them to work for nothing. Today's whole service (including wash and vac ... ) cost $160. I do not think that's expensive these days.

I would go for one with about 30~50K on it Taz. Won't cost you any more, or very little more; AND a heck of a lot better proposition. Regardless of what some may say here, the majority of engines are getting very tired by 150~200K Kms ...

Geez mate, glad you noticed.
Adds a bit of fuel to what I mentioned in the other thread about having it double-switched to a warning system, doesn't it.

Gidday All

Found a new listing for a 2008 MY09 XS with 65,000 Kms on it, and only about 10 Kms away. Dealer. $26K.

It seems to have the lot:

All the usual, plus:

Tow kit
Roof bars
Boot protection kit
One owner
Balance of new car warranty

Will ring them first thing in the morning.
Really depends on what they will give us for the Wreck of the Hesperus ...

I wouldn't be able to find a EJ202 that has that little km unfortunatly. Will be struggling to get one with less than 200k.
I'm only looking for a long block, not a whole new engine and wirring. Otherwise I would go for a H6 or turbo swap :iconwink:

Yep was a close call. Yes getting such bad fuel economy from fouled sensors does really add to the fuel cost.

Isn't that Forester a 3rd generation one being MY09?

G'day again mate

Isn't that Forester a 3rd generation one being MY09?

Yeah, it is.
But SWMBO isn't concerned about the various minor "accounting" removals.

I know that the autos all have the 90:10 F:R normal traction split. At least it is still constant AWD, unlike some of the other SUVs.

I understand that it goes to 50:50 if using 1/2 by direct selection, and the box is also designed to be used this way - please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

It also has a lot more rear seat room, so we could use it for long trips, as also more economical than mine.

Also meant to ask whether you can drop an EJ25x donk into yours?

Actually with the latest Gen it's 60/40 split not 90/10. then 50/50 in 1st and 2nd but only when Your at 50%+ throttle.

Yep much better than any other awd/constant 4wd system.

Actually unless it's the new FB25 that came out this year(2012) it has worse fuel economy than your Forester. They are less areodynamic and if it is an auto then in city driving you should get around 14-15l per 100km and 9-10L per 100 on the highway. It's pretty average for those, if i were you I would be looking for an SG but that's me.

Also meant to ask whether you can drop an EJ25x donk into yours?

Nope, then I need to change the wirring and all the likes. Just another EJ202 that way it's a straight swap and can be done in a day. Might rebuild an EJ20 with larger cams, pistons, etc.. to make it more torquey. I don't have the money for a whole engine swap (wirring, etc..). If I did do one it would either be a turbo subie engine or H6.
While I can put another EJ20 in for under $1000.

I think that's the sort of mileage you get out of an H6 in the Liberty/OB, not the 4 cylinder ones ... Subaru gradually improved the overall economy after the introduction of the 2.5L donk. Got a little better with each tweak, AFAICT.

SWMBO has agreed to come and look at the one I mentioned tomorrow morning first up. If it passes that inspection, AND they make a rational offer on the Camry (e.g. $3500~4000), I will put a holding deposit on it; then go back and do the full grovel and crawl trick. At 65K Kms, it should have new tyres on it, and that will also be a determinant.

Problem is, they may refuse to trade the Camry if they look at it too closely. That would kill the deal on the spot.

AND there also isn't a decent SG auto available from a dealer for about a 1000 Km radius. Except there is a black one in Melbourne that looks OK, but I am very bothered by black cars. Worst colour for safety; and buggers of things to keep clean! It's a lot cheaper at around $20K.

I see your point ... :(

Anyway, I am r**ted right now. Need to get to bed!

Hope all goes well with the inspection (& deal + offer) on the '08 you look at Ratbag.
I also agree with what you're saying re the black one. Especially the safety & cleaning part.
On top of that, they show every little mark (light scratches etc) & attract the heat more, rather than reflecting the heat like the lighter coloured ones do.

g'day ratbag

i was actually very suprised with the auto 4x4 system in my 04 forester, it reacts very quickly and i belive it would give my manual a run for its money. i do not notice the mainly front wheel drive setup due to it is so well balanced and distributes the immediatley

the 3rd gen are a nice car but the driving position isnt as high with ours ratbag and in my opinion our 2nd gens are also better looking

good luck finding a car! it took me about 6 months to find our latest forester because i was very picky

The local dealer still has the 09 MY10 - they bloody well should, only came in yesterday, LOL! It's the one I originally said was an '08 MY09 ... DOH! I as pretty dozy last night, and not much better this morning ...

We are going to check it out this AM.

Sorry to hear about the major work on the Camry Ratbag.

Good luck with the '08. It seems to have about average Kms, my only concern would be the price. Obviously the dealer will price it a bit higher, but unless it is the Premium, a MY09 for 26k with 65k kms seems a bit high to me.Edit - just saw your post Ratbag. The pricing for the MY10 makes more sense! I'm not an expert, but I'm just thinking in relation to mums MY09 XS. Not to sound like an idiot, but when Subaru are doing deals for $32,990 on a brand new X Special Edition (with '$4500' of extra value) or $31,990 for a standard X at the moment, I'd be considering that myself. New engine (updated from the EJ to the FB) , full warranty etc. But thats IMHO, and I don't know any circumstances around the decision (other than the wise move away from the Camry :p)

Economy wise it's not too bad, hovers around the 11ish mark, I've had it down to 6.2 on a run to the airport and back (mainly freeways). Ours sits on about the same as the MY05 (both run on 95 PULP)

But SWMBO isn't concerned about the various minor "accounting" removals.

Spot on - I've got to do a quick run to Canberra in a few weeks, and I doubt I'll be able to take dad's car, so my pick for the trip is the 09. The 05 isn't bad by any means, but the 09 is the better all round car for highway work - more refined, slightly more comfortable, more leg room and more economical. I personally think going for a SH would be a wise decision Ratbag seeing as you already have the SG for yourself.

Excuse the ramble. Good luck with the decision! (I assume it is the green one?)

Those prices are for demonstrators. Possibly the very worst way to do the first couple of hundred Kms in any car ...

By the time you option up to the level of the car we're looking at, the RRP is more like $42K+, so makes a LOT more sense ...

Bought the car, moved all the posts to a new thread here.
Seemed sensible ...

IMHO, it appears that the very best of the Foresters are the MY06/07 models.

I beg to to disagree, anything after 2004 had electronic 'e' stuff replace the good ol' mechanical stuff. I'm not into e-options on cars as they tend to go wrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowrong gowronnnnnnnggggggggggg gowrong gopaqp452&^$@.. _______--.. # ........
