Wombat has not visited since 3rd May 2012 but he said "The relays are removed by unclipping the white clip that holds them in their holder."

got it all sorted.
Disconnect battery first.
used a long flat blade screwdriver to push down the tab on the white clip and long nose pliers to pull out the relay with connector. screwdriver again to push the tab on the connector to release the relay.
On the MY05 Forester XT it is the bottom relay with a pink connector. Jump pins 3 and 4. This mod also gives constant 12v to the centre console plug along with the rear hatch.
I also bought a couple of Jaycar 12v discharge protectors on clearance at $9.95
