hi guys, just another tire thread
icon_razz.gif

i have two foresters, the first is the 1st gen with king springs the second is the 2nd gen no mods.

i was looking for a offorad tire on a set of 16's the current size i have is 215/60r16 and was looking at this size or the 215/65r16. not realy fused on which size i get.

the choices i have looked at are the:
Yokohama's AT/R that i know are very popular on here
icon_biggrin.gif

Bridgeston Dueler AT/R
Good year Wrangler A/T
Dunlop Grandtrek AT2/3

so what are peoples previous experience, or recomendations? also if people have a rough estimate on the price of tires they recommend that would be great!

thanks for the input

The Yoki's are the AT-s (NOT AT-r).

If your SG Fox is the same as mine, I would go for the 215/65 16 as these will (partially) correct the speedo error that I have. At 100 km/h real, my speedo shows ~106 km/h. The 215/65 tyres reduce this inaccuracy to ~103 displayed at 100 real. That's acceptable to me.

thanks ratbag mine is the sg just a few years older, good to know they fit.
the only car i have ever driven were the speedo is correct is my brumby!

You have probably seen this thread already, but I'll put it up anyway just in case you haven't :)
What tyres are you running on?

I'm running the yokohama AT/S (215/65/16)
I've had them for a while now & think they're great :)
I'll be looking for new tyres towards the end of the year & will be getting the same again :iconwink:

Not sure about what they cost now, but they would be around the $220-$230 mark per corner at a guess.

You read my thoughts Ratbag, as they are AT/s (not AT/r)
I'm guessing it's a typo (??)

Mr Turbo

Don't know if they fit, but they are only a teensy bit bigger in diameter - 21 mm. Should be OK. Rally or Mr T will know.

Check the tyre size calculator here:
https://www.inawise.com/tyre-calculator/tyre-size-calculator.html

Sorry to cut the other conversation short, but stressing my poor brain too much for today ... :iconwink:

Yes that is correct. They (215/65/16) will fit

Mr Turbo

Thanks, mate.
Great to know.
Will probably be ordering a set in the next week or so.

The Pirelli P7s are going on the trailer ...

G'day Mr T

What mileage have you got from them?
Are they noisy on the hard black stuff?

My P7s are wearing out before my very eyes ...
They'll be dead in about 10,000 kms at the outside. Will last forever on the trailer ...
Don't know how long they have been on the Fox.

I have done 35,000km in my AT-S tyres (in less thna a year) and will hopefully be getting them again dpending on a few things. I have about 10,000-15,000km left in mine. Best tyre ever as an allrounder. Very very good offroad and very good onroad. Highly recommended by me

Thanks Taza

I won't even consider a tyre that gives less than 50,000+. Preferably 50,000+ a lot ...

At around $900 a set of 4, even that's adding a lot to the running cost per km.

Sorry, my CPA training coming out ....

Thanks Taza

Im hard on my tyres remember, not like you normal people. Us young people 'hoon' lol

Well then you better go the Light truck ones which is what im going next in the AT-S, although more expensive the average life is between 80,000-120,000km!

Maybe I should have added "anal retentive" when it comes to money :rotfl:.
Not really, but I always strive to get decent value for money out of whatever I spend it on ...

I'll just have to start calling you "HB" = "Hoon Boy"

AND careful who you're calling "normal", sport ... :rotfl:

Which ones are they?
I can only find 215/60 and 215/65 16" on the Yokohama web site.

I could go to 215/70 16 which would make my speedo 100% accurate, but I like to have some wiggle room with this, just not as much as I currently have.

are any of the tires i have mentioned cheaper thent the yokohama's???
i dont realy care to much about wear becuase i have 2 sets of rims so these will just be my offroading tires. becuase of this i dont realy want to spend $900 on a set of tires im only going to use on weekends.

Gidday T39

For any kind of off road tyre, the Yokis are cheap ... :(
Be thankful that you aren't buying the same rubber in 17". Add around $100 a corner!!

For on-road tyres, I found that Bridgestone GR90 were good on my Impreza, and cheap (14" rims). They are about $30 a corner cheaper than the AT-s in 16" size. Probably better than my Pirelli P7s for off-road use, and a bucket load of dosh cheaper than them (the Pirellis cost much more than the AT-s) AFAICT.

i already have a set of my old rims with the bridgestone dueler HT that i was going to use for on the road and everyday tires. i was hoping that a less superior tire would be cheaper then the yokohama's possible the bridgestone dueler AT because from what i understand they are inferior compared to the yokohama's

G'day again T39

i already have a set of my old rims with the bridgestone dueler HT that i was going to use for on the road and everyday tires.

In our foray down the Phasmid Track in Bunyip SP, NL's AT-s were every bit as useless as my P7s ...

The reason I am going for the AT-s is that they are reasonably stake-proof, whereas the Pirellis are renowned for having sidewalls you can poke a stiff drinking straw through without too much trouble.

The AT-s offer a reasonable balance between on-road performance (excellent) and acceptable off-road performance.

As I mentioned before, I looked at dropping to 15" rims and mounting Bridgestone D694 LT tyres, but that ended up at around $2,200 for the rim swap plus the rather expensive D694 LTs. They do look like a nice tyre though:
https://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/treads/d694.aspx

Also they are only S rated, not H rated for speed.

i was hoping that a less superior tire would be cheaper then the yokohama's possible the bridgestone dueler AT because from what i understand they are inferior compared to the yokohama's

IF ONLY it worked like that ... :iconwink:.
Welcome to the real world, mate ... ;) :lildevil:.

...... I have about 10,000-15,000km left in mine.
I'm about at the same stage as you taza with mine :)
Mine currently have about 36k on them & I'd say they are about 66% (33% or 18k-20k left) Thus giving me 54k-55k out of them :raz:
I should & might even be able to squeeze a little more out of them too if I'm lucky :iconwink:

As for noise, I don't find them to be loud at all. If anything, they are quieter than I thought they'd be.
However, if you corner hard, they do growl a little, but nothing major

Best tyre ever as an allrounder. Very very good offroad and very good onroad. Highly recommended by me
Yes I'll most definitely 2nd that

They're brilliant offroad, fantastic in the wet & great in the dry :raz:

I'm not sure about how it works where you are Ratbag, but in NSW, that size won't be legal
I know in NSW that you are allowed a +/- 15mm (I think thats right) on what's OEM.

Might be worth checking that out too mate :iconwink:
