Taza's $300 L-Series

I need to continue and finish the journal for my Forester but I will start one for this anyway.

While the Foz is being repared (new gearbox, engine work, subaxtreme bullbar fitment and finish off the supercharger) I bought a cheap L-Series from gumtree.
Cost $300 and its a 91 L-series Sportswagon, 230,000km on the clock, smooth gearbox, engine runs really well but dies on idle and doesn't blow any smoke at all! The body is in great condition for a car thats 21years old. A few dents but can all be popped out.
No rust at all, and barely any on the exhaust.

Needs a new front CV, has a small oil leak (not going to fix it), 3 bald tyres, engine dies on idle, temp guage doesn't work and no stereo or immobilser..

Just gotta do a few things to get it over the pits and she should be running and road licenced for about $500!!!

Oh man you got spotties!!! hahah that's all i can see since I'm looking at getting some Cheapo SCA brand lights soon. Hopefully the idle problem is only due to a vacuum hose leaking or something simple/easy/cheap but that's a really nice buy, low k's too! I wish I had found one this seemingly good for that price. I would have had a bunch of fun beating the bush up with it... respectfully of course :)

You might be able to get club rego on it once you finish your Foz, turn it into a real bush basher lol

So by the time you get it registered, it sounds like less than $1000 total layout...awesome! :monkeydance:

Yeah, should be sweet

 I know it is not your intention, but I see another offroader project in your future.:iconwink:

Actually stock is quite nice, i would be more inclined to turn it into a undercover wrx or nice road car more so.

The spots aren't wired up. lol

na, i like it stock.

Its almost scary onroad with literally bald tyres on the front, not even a millimetre of thread!
It seems to hqve quite abit of power, maybe the 13's really help.

Took it to one of the best Subie mechanics(RSR from Ausubaru) in Perth today just for a check over....
solved the idling, turns out to b the air filter was so clogged. looked like it hadn't been cleaned in over 10 years!!!!
Made it run even better but its done a slight head gasket :( Sogoing to try some chemiweld and that set her good for awhile as a cheap fix.
Got a few small things tk do so she passes the pits but will be well worth it :D

Replaced the front left stuffed CV today with the help of Dave. It was a real PITA but im glad its done.

Bought some new spark plugs, oil, ooil filter, air filter, coolant and tyre valve caps today. Done some of the stuff. The chem-i-weld in the radiator has fixed the head gasket leak im pretty sure, the cars running much better, idles better. has a small miss on one of the cylinders but much better than what she was. Got the ignition barrel sorted so you don't have to fiddle with that to start the car.
Scored a spare wheel, front right indicator and a few other bits for her from an L-series enthusiast in Perth so im happy about that.

Needs a wash too and a few bits then shes ready to roll :D

Sounds like you've been busy taza.
Great to hear that it's almost ready to go mate :)

Can always pick a bloke with no 'handbrake'.

A fun., affordable early Subi is extremely logical as a run-around... so why don't I have one? ...

I could start a competition on this one... but I'll leave it off - Ausubaru members will know what I'm talking about :D

Because you're not looking hard enough for a sweet L series deal! You've seen what can be done with them - now you've just got to see it back in one piece!

Taza, I'm counting the days before the EJ conversion comes around. I give you 18 months at the most! It's the best way to go! I just wish I got a later model EJ, but beggers can't be choosers! I got a lot of donated parts - wiring looms mainly :D

You'll love the L series - and you're doing it backwards, most go from the ol' trusty L series to the forester...

Cheers

Bennie

Believe me that wont happen. Us poor uni students cant afford an engine conversion on a project car.
