Abercrombie Trip Feb 2012

Hey JohnA - yes it was Little Bald Hill.

The river crossing you went to is the Retreat river & is currently closed by NPWS.

The Abercrombie river usually shows 500 - 600mm at the guage (not sure exactly where the guage is) and last Friday it when to over 6.5M

The Defender must have been to Licking Hole to wash his brass walls or is that balls!

The Sink is a great camping spot for small groups. We like Silent Creek better as it is bigger for our group & deeper into the park. NPWS sometimes say that The Sink is assessable to 2WD - but I would not take my wifes VW Polo there, maybe a Falcon with LSD in dry weather.

I like driving to The Beach for a look around & maybe morning tea but for camping I think it is pretty ordinary - nowhere nice to pitch a tent.

Mr T - it is funny how slow the drive up Bald Hill seems on the video, it certainly goes a lot quicker when you are driving it & my heart pumps real fast.

Cheers

That video was from a Toyota (can't remember their name) that was with us on the trip 2 years ago (March 2010)

Your not wrong there mate
It sure does get the adrenaline going thats for sure

My heart was really going this time around, especially towards the top, when I started to drift (to the left) a little & I saw that barbed wire fence post coming towards me :rolleyessarcastic:
Luckily, the tyres bit just in time  And as they say, the rest is history :p

Fantastic photos! Thanks for sharing :bananatoast:

I would love to have come but looking at that video confirmed to me it would probably have been a bit too much for Outback in terms of approach/departure angle courtesy.

Also, I don't have the confidence in my stock road tyres to be spinning all fours on sharp rocks like that.

Glad you had fun and conquered that hill! I feel a new banner coming on....:raspberry:

We've had at least one Outback on that trip before so it's doable. I don't think anyone that was there for that trip will ever forget it though LOL.

I wouldn't allow a standard Outback on my trips to Abercrombie, too much chance of damage to front end and no way if one was on the trip would I try to take it on Little Bald Hill Fire Trail.

I did take a lifted Outback with replacement front bar there once and he went well - but that was the year before we found Bald Hill.

Standard Foresters are only just OK on these tracks and even so there is a big chance of damage to front end like I did to my blue 07 before I got the replacement front bar.

Now to start the manual/auto debate.

The manuals have a lot more trouble on Bald Hill then the autos - that is unless it is a manual with a turbo - hey Mr T.

Looks like a great time was had by all, doubt my front bumper would last 5min heading up that track, though it might be worth it if I could make it to licking hole.

Yes very much so.
I honestly think that an auto will win on a hill climb like that any day of the week.
Unless it has the added torque of a turbo, the manuals just tend to run out of puff unfortunately

How far past Retreat River is the Beach? I've crossed the river there once before but after a poke around on the other side I went back across the River and up that steep little climb again - just to make sure I could get out in fact...

Yes I find trying to keep revs up and speed down with stalling or causing damage is a trial.

I'm an MY09 so I have the 220mm clearance but when things get hairy I usually touch down somewhere - mostly the subxtreme sump plate.

I tend to think the Scorpian low range set would solve the problem for a manual gearbox but every time I save the money I throw it on the mortgage.

Looking at those images of Mr T on Little Bald Hill you can see he's giving it a boot-full. Though I did read somewhere here that another chap chugged quietly up in a Forrie and had no great drama.

Once you cross the Retreat river you go the big hill for 1.3km & turn right to go down to the river. It is about 1km from turn off to The Beach.

The Beach is the only time in the NP that you actually see the Abercrombie river

If the river is low you can go rock hopping upstream.

The drive out of the Beach is very steep.

We have been to Little Bald Hill 5 times now.

My Foresters are the only ones to make it up first time each time.

Kevin now drives the Triton but I think he made it up in the Forester a few times and maybe with a couple attempts on some trips.

Damian has made it up 3 times and just missed it twice.

Another guy in an 09 auto made it up 2nd attempt.

The person who did the best was Troy in his 06 turbo auto - he did it twice first go and had some left in the bag.

We have had others Foresters and a Rav that needed to be towed up.

Cheers

You sure have & are definitely the king of the hill mate :bananatoast:

When it's said just missed it was by the smallest amount too  And we are talking by only a matter of a few meters :o

Don't forget about the 60 Series, that needed to be winched up either, from back in 2010
