Thinking of getting this...opinions??

I spoke to the salesman and he was fairly pushy. If you look through the photos there is one of the dash and it clearly shows the klms at 92,150 whereas it is advertised at 89,802. When i questioned him about this he gave me some rooster and bull story about the lower figure being the one that would have been on it when they originally got it and the owners would have driven it until their new car arrived.
This is blantant nonsense as they would not have advertised it until it was in the dealers yard.
He then told me he drove it last week and it was a lovely car.
I asked him about the 100,000 service which i assume is the same as a 2.5 motor and would need the timing belt done and he said that it 'probably has been done' as they do the service that is next due.
If they got it at 89,000klms i find it hard to believe that they did the 100,000 service as it would have just had the 87,500klm service done.
I was not really happy about him and whatever way you look at it it is sloppy attention to detail when you advertise a car with an incorrect odometer reading.
I think i will be patient.

There's a few red flags coming up there from the sounds of it
I'd be more than inclined to walk (perhaps run) away from that one.

I think, that being patient is a very good idea :)

Yeah that is vey odd.

Superficialy it looks like a winner, but digging deeper as you did it starts to unravel! :shake:

The dealer sounds very dodgy & when you buy a car you're also buying the dealer. I think you're absolutely right to walk away from this one...there'll be plenty more if you're patient

That Pickles car looks interesting.
Carl, i found that out at the local Subaru dealer but he was not sure if all the 6s had timing chains or just some of them.
Makes me wonder all the more about the other bloke as he had no idea.
By the way, the fellow i have been talking to at Zupps Southport Subaru is a young fellow that used to work for Subaru in the US.

I agree with others. If the dealer seems to be dodgy (most aren't ... ) run a mile from it.

The dealer I bought Roo2 from was more than happy for me to have anyone I liked check the vehicle. They also rang the Subaru dealer who had serviced the car to find out if the timing belt had been done at the 100K service. Then told me that it hadn't been. Would have been very easy for them to lie ...

I also checked with the servicing dealer's workshop manager, who verified everything about the car's history.

I spent about 3 hours grovelling in and under the car checking that all the seams were straight and undamaged. No sign of abuse on the under floor panels and gear. Spent two days and two long test drives before I signed. I did put a $50 holding deposit on it after my initial inspection; AND got a receipt detailing that ...

Roo2 also came with a 3 year engine and drive train warranty from a third party warranty insurance company.

IOW, everything looked genuine, including the pedal wear (:iconwink:). Not a single thing to make me even slightly suspicious that I was being sold a pup ...

Every person at that dealer (Dan Evans Motors at Ringwood, Melbourne) seemed to me to be decent and honest. Nothing was too much trouble.

I can't view the car as the link no longer works. But by the sounds, its a Gen4 Outback or Liberty H6?

The story about the odometer reading sounds very suss to me. Somethings not right. Best bet would be to check the log book, call around the dealers that supposedly serviced it and get a log of the odometer reading when it was serviced just to see that it all adds up.

Overall the H6 is a good reliable motor. The 2001-2003 models did suffer from some HG failure but the EZ30R in the Gen4 didn't have many issues at all. All H6's make a slightly whiny sound. This is normal and characteristic of the H6. Its something to do with the gearbox I believe.

I have to teach myself to be patient!!!!!!
I wasn't happy with the first fellow and something doesn't appear to be right with the Pickles one from the link as they have a black Outback of the same model with about 69,000 (i think) that is a fair bit dearer and they have not posted a pic of the other car.
I am in no hurry and probably will let the Zupps guy hunt around a bit for me as it is 5 mins from where i live and i prefer to see things for myself and could easy rack up 100's of klms going here and there.
Be patient lad:ebiggrin:.
I will amuse myself getting my new camper set up how i want it.

Having just been through the buying a second hand car experience, it seems as if the next car on the list seems to be the better deal. I have to admit the used car salesman was no used car salesman. A good honest car at a good price from a Subaru dealer. I bought my Forrie from a Ford dealer and got a great deal. The used car warranty is definitely a valuable thing- extended ones are not.

"Probably" :huh: ....... "Probably" :huh::huh: What a joke !!
If I heard that from a dealer, I'd be out the door real quick.
You wouldn't see me for dust :bananagunner:

Now thats what you want to hear :) I shows you that they have nothing to hide :)
They are the kind of dealers/salesman I like to deal with :)

Quite.

The used car warranty is definitely a valuable thing- extended ones are not.

Roo2 came with three "warranties":
  1. Standard statutory 3 months/5,000 kms on everything;
  2. Extended 3 year engine/drive train warranty from Integrity Care Care Pty Ltd (not from the dealer, which would be, or could be, next to worthless ... ). This was paid for by the dealer, and included in the purchase price, of course. Integrity inspect any car before they agree to insure it ... Nuff said. They are in the business of selling the product and never having to pay out; so they only insure cars that pass their inspection.

I rang their office to find out what the go was ...

AFAICT, Roo2 was the only car out of hundreds on the lot or the surrounding lots that offered such a warranty.
  3. 12 month RACV Roadside Assist package.
It all goes towards the credibility of the dealer, and reduces the chances of one's getting a complete dud! Just IME & HO.

I thought some H6s had Tbelts but I could be wrong.

The other guy was a full on salesman who would tell you anything to get a sale then disappear like a worm in mud!

Is there anyway of checking if cars at auction have been in an accident and been repaired??

There is a register of repairable writeoffs, otherwise a decent inspection from your RAC will be able to tell you

Extended warranties generally are conditional that they service the car and exclude everything except a spider crapping on your tyre on 32nd December. I understand all H6's have chains- well not sure about the SVX but all the recent stuff anyway.

Not all states are part of the write off register- so it is almost meaningless.

Well aware of that kind of thing, but good that you brought it up.

Integrity insist that the vehicle is serviced by a registered business who are in the business of servicing vehicles, that's all. Our normal garage (also a Bosch franchise ... ) is perfectly acceptable to them. IOW, not a backyard mechanic, like me ...

They also insist that services are carried out in a timely manner, having regard to both mileage and time limits, as specified by the manufacturer.

At each service the garage sends them the second copy from the service booklet they provide for the purpose.

That's all fair enough in my book.
