NOOB Moding '09 Forester!

G’day all!
I am new to the forums and new to this idea of moding. *I own a ’09 Forester XS and* I currently live in Hastings, Vic, Aus. *I would like to make my Forester more offroad capable. *I am really keen to get out and about and off the beaten track, offroading, camping, skiing, Mt biking, and go out on some trips with a club.
I THINK I have a rough idea what I’m doing. I would love some tips, advice, help choosing, products, contacts, expertise, etc. I have a budget for everything I’m thinking of doing and will try stick to it but I don’t want to compromise on quality so it may have to be done in several stages. *Also, I am keen to do it all myself to learn more and have that pride in it, I think I have the expertise but may need some help and need to buy extra tools. I am trying to stick to a budget of $5000... I’ve not done calculations yet ...
***************
The things I’m looking at doing is:-
The main thing I want to get done/do properly is a dual battery system under the bonnet. I have spoken to ARB and TJM and they say its not done without A LOT of work, if at all. I know there isn’t A LOT of room under there but it has to be able to be done. I dont really like the idea of a removable battery in the wagon area that takes up space and can move around in a crash or something. (cant leave radio on or lights or fridge on for camping)
Sump Guard - subaxtreme (general protection)
***Offroad Bullbar - subaxtreme (approach angle, collisions, lights, bushbash, tow points, etc)
***2"Suspension lift kit - Crossbred Performance (Blocks or springs or?)
***Air Compressor - ARB - CKMA12 (built in under hood for car and mt bike (ARB air lockers?))
***CB Radio - Prestige Communication - GME TX3100 bonus pack (do I need this?)
***Driving lights (I own an old set to start with)
Diff lock switch I’ve read about (cheap, need books and read more)
***Larger AT Wheels and tires (improve capability, 1 good set 1 rough set)
***Snorkle (river crossings, do I need straight away?)
***Like I’ve said I’m really new to this whole thing so I have no real idea what is best to do and what is “needed” so Im just trying to figure it all out from reading forums (not my strong point) and any advice you guys may give. I am more interested in touring and general offroad stuff, beach (stockton) and snow (real home Jindabyne), Im not really keen on rockcrawling.
***I am keen to try get most of it organised together and then do it in 1 big hit soonish... So if all goes well I’ll keep up the thread with the work and pics and then see you out and about shortly! :lildevil:
Anything from you guys would be greatly appreciated...even just moral support :quitar:

As long as the heat shrink covers all the copper, once it shrinks when the heat is applied it will be nicely sealed. If your really worried you can get resin heat shrink which melts resin on the inside for a perfect seal.

Make sure you fuse the power feed from the battery to the relay.

And that you've got a fuse in there too!

Thats what I was thinking of doing, but the heat shrink would still leave a small gap for water wouldnt it?

It'll be a good seal, make it longer than needed if you want, just make sure you heat it all so it shrinks properly! Also don't get the heat shrink that's too large.

And as mentioned the resin heat shrink - it's good stuff and I love using it over the standard heat shrink.

Cheers

Bennie

My Forester has served me greatly getting to places and carrying my bikes/gear and me! Great for camping and skiing too! I'm trying to work out a decent way to put my bikes on the inside for long trips and offroad hight restrictions. For Xmas I had 2 bikes upside down behind the passenger removing the front wheel. It worked alright just want to work out a better way to secure them and I don't like putting then upside down. I'll put them in and take pic of how I had it over Xmas trip.
We'll have to go for a ride before I leave for sydney!

Yeah mate that would be great, although its been a few years since I've had the time to go riding with regularity - fitness has suffered a bit since then :P But would be great to load up some Subies and head out somewhere for a ride. I'd be keen to check out your car too! Looks very sweet!

Thanks everyone for your help and advice!!!
Well... Everything has to be put on hold! I was hoping to get the lifts and once ordered them I was going to order BullBar! Then I was going to get all my camping gear I needed and do a trip upto Fraser Island before winter!
NOW however I am flying over to WA on the 16th until after easter weekend! Then overseas! Im not meant to return till the 30 June at the latest. Going to see some good interesting places though! Ill still be reading and trying to do as much research while away!
Ill do my ordering while away and hope it will all be here when I get home and I can take holidays to install then take a long trip!

That sounds like a fun trip! Enjoy and safe travels to yah!

I am very interested to see your forester come together! There aren't enough "off road" new foresters out there:)

Well I have been abit busy at work and at home, but Iv been doing a few things.
I did a trip with the Vic suby club on the Labour day weekend and had a BALL!!! Cant wait to get out again! The car as stock went very well and surprised me and I think a few of the others as well!
I have since added-
ARB Awning, I had to make brackets for my pro-rack's
Finally finished my sump guard! Well almost, I still have to take it back off and prime and paint it next week! Will look nice black checkerplate!
Iv also added to my supplies... ABR Compressor, MaxTrax, recovery hitch, speedy seal and some camping stuff, still not decided on fridge (brand/size, want it to go under boot cover) or cooker/stove... I am going to wait on the swag/rooftent/tent/car thing.
I have bought 4 new rims too! These getting delivered start next week, trying to buy 2 more locally and paint these black too! Going to TRY put Cooper A/T tyres on them! currently run 65, going to see if I can run 75s?
