Hail Damage?

I was called by shannons today and told to get a quote, so atleast it wasn't an automatic write off. I'm not sure if you can use second hand parts in a repair? I got some second hand panels in perfect condition (they're white though) in a hope the repair cost would be less, incase i ended up paying for the repairs. Now i'm hoping maybe the repairer could factor them into the quote, make it less and hence less chance of write-off?

In the absence of a write-off they will charge whatever your fixed excess is anyway, irrespective of cost, so no saving for you using used parts.

If they write it off then you can buy it out, get the repairs done using your 2nd hand panels and re-insure.

then the battle to save the car starts.

Getting sick of panel beaters: first Djulpan in a hailstorm, then the "horrible" accident in the Cobaws, and now this.

We Greg, you know the saying - "be careful of what you wish for"

I remember you saying something about a re-spray?? Mentioned more than once perhaps?

All the best with it!

Cheers

Very glad to hear it Rhys.

I agree with Barry, they will still charge you the same excess so I'd keep em. I know your trying to lessen the repair costs to make sure they dont write it off but it sounds like they're gonna repair it.

I've heard at least one insurance company is calling it a "catastrophe" & automatically writing off all damaged vehicles. Not sure how true it is, sounds a bit crazy but who knows how they work. Their policies defy logic at times! :shake:

Nup. It will stay on the road. Just a mater of how.

Never doubted it! Well, just a little lol ;)

They told me to do the same, I waited about 3 weeks to get an appointment and the guy stepped out of the office and from the other side of the car park wrote it off lol, then I waited about 6 weeks to see the assessor and the rest is history, really depends on what it's insured for but they weren't touching too many cars over 7-8yo, I'd rather let them write it off and have the money to do whatever whenever than be without it for possibly weeks, there is a really nice twin sunroof Outback Anniversary here with a shagged motor going for less than 3k, I'd rather buy something like that and swap everything over myself in my own time and know I had a genuinely good car than something that may have been rushed because they are so busy.

:( Haha thanks for the dose of reality d_generate! Sounds like it could be a long process, especially considering this time of year.

It could actually turn out to be the second best thing that ever happened to the vehicle ;-)

My good panel beater (as distinct from the dodgy one) has advised me to NOT get Shannon's to do the first assessment, lest it be a write off. I will be taking his advice.

Last monday I got an assessment done by my choice of repairer who i have used before. Real nice bloke, last time i had my car fixed he dropped me off at home, picked me up and gave me his home phone number to organise the lifts. Good rep around ballarat too. Only down side is they're not the fastest operators in the world, but speed is my last priority.

Prelimenary repair cost is looking to be around $6,000. Using the second hand doors and tailgate he can list the doors as repairable rather than a reskin, and he estimates he can bring the total cost of repair down to about $5,000. Agreed value with shannon's is $10,000 so i think things are looking positive at this stage that the car will get fixed.

Looks like it was a smart move getting the assesment done in Ballarat and buying those second hand panels.

yep I reckon you're right

Lets hope you get good news soon, Also Dulagarl... :)

Shannonas accepted the quote for repairs. I was told without the second hand panels it would have been a write off. Booked in for the 13th, lucky break buying those panels.

Stoked for you mate!

Hopefully no one backs into it after all that work is done!

Cheers

Sounds like it was a good move alright by getting those panels :)
I now just like to wish your Subi a speedy recover
Did they give you a time frame of how long it's going to take (from the 13th) at all ? Hopefully it won't take too long.

Regards
Mr Turbo
