What oil are you using?

Thanks. I'll keep it brief for chickenlover. CL.....i'm not sure what model you have but i have an MY05 and can use down to a 5-30. Brisbane is not that hot and a 5-30 would be fine if your model can use it. Full synthetic oils will let the motor run better as they are more 'slippery' than mineral oils and don't break down as easy under temperature and keep your engine cleaner. The lower the rating you use, under normal circumstances, the less effort required by the engine to push the oil around.
So a 5-30 will be more efficient than a 15-50.
One of the tests i read comparing synthetic oils did not rate Shell very well. Mobil1 and the BP one came up good.
I used to use Mobil1 10-30 and wanted a 5-30 which Mobil make but it is hard to find and costs around $80 so i changed to Castrol Edge 5-30 which you can often pick up at Supercheap or Autobarn on special. I got one a while back for $38 which was about $13 off. Subaru also sell a 5-30 which is made by Castrol.
I use Mobil Delvac in my gearbox and diffs. This is a full synthetic also.
Try this....use a 5-30 and change your plugs to NGK IridiumIX's.
You WILL be happy with the result.:)

Try this...change to a 5-30 and use NGK Iridium IX plugs.

Thanks Silver
ive got a gen 3 OB ('01)
Ive run iridiums for about 60 000k's and the shell is fully synthetic. I started using it as i wasnt happy with the magnatec.

Ive used a higher viscosity oil as I wasnt entirely happy with the apparently low oil pressure immediately on start up (engine didnt sound right for the first 3 seconds).

Higher viscosity will keep the good bits coated for longer when not running, and id rather trade off a small amount of power for longevity of the engine due to oil coverage. Since using the current stuff - ive had no issues on start up, and the low rev timing clang sometomes apparent has gone.

I might give the edge ago at some stage but cant justify $80 - $90 for Mobile 1... and the donk runs great on current lube
Cheers

Try a 10-30. I don't think Magnatec is a full synthetic. Castrol edge is on sale at Supercheap at the moment for $34.95. Thats $17 off.
In reality a 5-30 should get around the engine quicker at start up and protect it better. That is part of the idea of it.
60,000kls on the Iridiums. Almost time to replace them. I think NGK suggest every 50,000. They don't last as long as Platiniums.I think i'm just pushing 50k on mine but they seem fine.:)

i guess im working to the idea that being more viscous - it doesnt run off components as much as a runnier oil - hence there is more thre at start up. either way im happy atm.

As for thirridiums - when i got these 100 000k's was the suggested life - I was going to replace in the next 5k anyway - but hadnt heard 50k was suggested. Mine are still fine too.

I use Valvoline XLD Premium 20w50 on my EA82.

If I use anything thinner/better the lifters go nuts at me

Im another one with castrol edge 5w/30 full synthetic. Use it in my Mazda too, so its easy for changes. And cheap.

Worth a look?

I have been using Castrol Magnatec 10w40 in my 2.5l n/a 05 Outback. Picked up a 4x5lt box at Supache@p in October, now need a new supply. (I commute 5,000km every 7 weeks, mostly open freeway, so try and keep the changes 'regular'.)

Came across this site https://lubesonline.com.au/lubecart/index.php in a discussion thread on myswag.org.

I might give the [Caltex] Havoline Semi Synthetic 10w40 a try. 5lt pack of 4: $127.10 (inc. GST)

Including shipping $22.90 that makes $150.00 = $37.50 per 5lt.

For comparison:
Fully Synthetic 5w40. 5 Lt Pack of 4: $169.35 (inc. GST)

[Mineral] Premium Plus10w30. 5 Lt Pack of 4:$111.70 (inc. GST)

I presume shipping to Melb would be the same.

Hi ive been using penrite hpr5 in my 06 xt forrester. Comming up to my secound oil change since bying it havent noticed any problems. Us to use hpr 15 in my old car a hyndia coupe seemed good in it all my mates that are into performance cars have sworn bye the penzoil hpr range in all there cars. Just did my oil change last week. I always use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic. I had Mobil 1 5W50 in there for summer but I've chosen 0W-40 for the autumn & winter months.

I change the oil every 5000km as it's a turbo which occasionally gets some 'spirited' driving.

The car is at 130,000km and does not leak, burn or lose any oil between changes. I'm aiming for a long life so I like to keep the service history impeccable.

Note: I also changed the rear diff oil. I used Castrol Fully Synthetic 75W-90 API GL-5 and it is noticeably smoother.

DIY Forever!

Probably wouldn't hurt to check if a 0-50 is OK for your engine. Not sure about the turbos but i thought i read somewhere that a 5 is as low as we should go.

Good point, I was a little hesitant at first but I did a great deal of research and found plenty of Subaru turbo drivers using it. One guy even uses it in his STi for track days.

I'll only use it for winter, then I'll switch back again.

:)I'd check it out. I see from your tag you are living in Sydney. There is no way a 0 (bottom) oil is needed for this climate. I am living in NW Central Vic (at the moment) where the morning temps will drop to -2,-3, 0 etc in the middle of winter and a 5-30w is fine. If you check the oil recommendations off the web sites of Castrol and Mobil i doubt if they will suggest what you are using. These recommendations will be sourced from the manufactuers.
I checked the Mobil website and they are suggesting a 5-30 in the Mobil1. The Castrol site suggests a 5-30 in the Edge range. I suggest, there is a reason they suggest, a 5-30.
I remember a very experienced Woolworths manager pulling me into line one day when i question how we were doing something. He told me Woolworths spend millons of dollars sorting out how to do stuff and they know better than me. He was right of course. :)

What a fantastic article. It confirms to me that I'm doing fine with my Mobil 1 0W-40. It is a very very very nice oil.

This is the most relevant line I found:
"It is time to dispel the notion that 0W-30 oil is too thin when our manual calls for 10W-30. A 0W-30 is always the better choice, always. The 0W-30 is not thinner. It is the same thickness as the 10W-30 at operating temperatures."

Lots of stuff in that. Good article. He does also say that oil companies and car manufactuers know what they are talking about. If you followed his advice i see a 0-30w in a full synthetic as what he would suggest.
I'm taking my old bosses' advice. I DON"T know better than Castrol,Mobil or Subaru.
Good to get others opinions though.:)

0W-30 or 0W-40 - very little difference, it is highly unlikely one is going to blow my engine and the other isn't....

Sometimes when you have done all the research possible and you are knowledgeable on a subject you can then take a "calculated risk".....although in this case I am confident that there is little or no risk.

I prefer the 0W-40 over the 0W-30, as do hundred of Subie turbo drivers.

Thought I'd fire up an old thread - does any one know why we're paying twice the price for Castrol Edge 5W-30 that we were 3 years ago? The price of fuel hasn't doubled! Penrite and Nulon appear to have products similiar to Castrol at about 2/3rds the price. Thoughts!

Grant

Dunno...I dont use it. I'm a fan of Penrite. Using HPR10 (10W40/50). Not sure if its too heavy though, next time I may try a lighter grade
