Tiger Airways Blues

The plane that went into Botany Bay was possibly Hazelton? It was a regional airline- not one of the majors. I think DeHavilland made the Comet- which crashed for the reasons you said. Back then, BA was BOAC wasn't it? Qantas had an issue with an Airbus over WA when the pilot wanted it to go one way (straight ahead) and the plane wanted to go another (Down then up then down I think). There were some injuries. As a mate of mine who flies 747's says- if it's not a Boeing, I'm not going. He does not like any Airbus. Another mate who is also a Qantas pilot told me of the rather dark joke about United's safety record- United we fly, divided we fall. Anyway, the funniest day of my life was when he and a mate of his who flies for BA entertained us for a few hours by telling the funniest jokes I have ever heard. I was literally rolling around the floor in pain from laughing so hard. That is when I found out what airline pilots did on long haul flights- tell jokes all the time. Unbelievably hilarious they were, and for a long time too. Gee I wish I could remember jokes like that

Qantas have been going longer than almost anyone, they have never crashed and are the world's safest airline. I just hope they still have the same emphasis on safety that they did years ago

Not technically true - Qantas have never lost a plane that was in service[/url], they've crashed a few and had them fixed. The one that sticks in my mind was a 747 that over shot the runway on landing in Hong Kong or Beijing, I can't remember but it was over in that part of the world anyway. Most other airlines would have written the plane off as it was cheaper to buy a new one - for the sake of their safety record Qantas repaired the plane in the foreign country at a great monetary cost to them.

They've apparently written off a plane that was in for heavy maintenance, basically a full strip and rebuild. They were testing the landing gear when the plane slipped off the jacks resulting in a bellied plane and a set of jacks that had made their way through the wings.

It's all about statistics really and the different categories of damage/write off etc...

Cheers

I vaguely remember the incident you guys are talking about.
I thought it was Qantas too, but I could be wrong though.
