Hi, well my first question! I searched for "Fram air filter" and "fram oil filter" and got nothing. So, I purchased the Fram air and oil filter for my 04 Fossy, non-turbo but have not installed them yet. I just got the car and assumed they would be better than OEM. Did I make a mistake? Hoping for the best MPG with a good air filter. Thanks for comments and suggestions.

The stock paper filter does a pretty good job already - I wouldn't go playing with it.

Some say the K&N oil filter is the way to go but if you over oil it you coat your AFM and it doesn't work properly, if you under oil it the filter doesn't trap everything as well...

I personally just stick with the stock one and make sure it is in good condition at all times ;)

Cheers

Bennie

The frame filters will do you fine. As far as performance goes, i don't think you'll see a difference. I hear the $40 K&N "Life" air filters are really good & should give you a little bit better performance.

The main thing with the K&N filter is that it's for "life". One way or another, you'll wind up spending that much or more on your air filters if you go the other way. If you really want real performance, you should look at a cold air intake.

Fram makes the worst filters you could ever use on your car. They are cheap and many carmakers advise against their use. The oil filters are cheap garbage inside. There are horror stories on the internet. Kia and Hyundai do not recommend their use on their cars. I'll stick with Wix filters. That's interesting! I'll have to take a look into those Wix filters. Personally i have never had any problem with fram filters- oil or air with the 10yrs I've been using them, but def. don't want to have one in the future.
I know most all automakers advise against the use of any filter besides the "manufacturer filter", simply to get people to bring their autos back to the dealerships for service.
Where do you get the Wix filters at anyways?

I wouldn't use an oiled filter (e.g. K&N) in Aussie outback conditions - too much dust!

X2, I gave them up years ago. Try this, take a K&N type filter and hold it up to a bright light then do the same with an OEM type filter.

Anybody know why in the world there are 2 air filters under the hood in the 98-02 Foresters? The both go through the air induction, but one is also hooked up to the manifold. Any reason for this? I would think this would restrict airflow quite a bit and lower the performance.

Are you sure there are 2? On my car, one is a resonnator to reduce induction noise and is essentially empty. Resonnators do restrict performance but they do make a noticeable reduction in induction noise. I removed in from the WRX but left it there for the Forrie

Yep, i have replaced the one already that's just above the passenger side wheel well. Since i had been diggin under the hood, i thought to check out the other one that sits above the front transfer case & there's a hefty filter in there too.

Here's a pic with the two boxes that have filters in them on my '99 Forester S 2.5L.

I actually edited the pic in photobucket with text & arrows to show the boxes, but they aren't coming up. You can clearly see the boxes connected though, the one ontop being connected to the heads too.

Matt is just greedy and wanted 2 of them!

I wonder if i even need that first one on the side? You think it would hurt anything by taking it out?
