Help pick my new tyres, please?

Pity 16" steel rims dont grow on trees....

They do come up on ebay a bit - last couple of months a set of four with some tyre life left on the rubber went for about $232,and I bought two with 4000 km Geolanders for $122.

Maybe a group buy if four come up again?

The AT-S are great. I've had mine on since January and have put them through their paces plenty of times over, and they haven't let me down yet.

get cooper atr's sweet as tire, a slight bit of rubbing, but well worth it, i have heaps of cuts in my sidewalls but nothing has actually punctured it, because they have great inners! they als give you an extra inch of lift :-) they're $200 each

Hate to dig up an old thread, but I was wondering if some of the Yokohama A/T-S owners would be willing to chime in about their (now) longer term experience with them (on and off-road). I'm considering a set (either 215/65-16 OR 235/60-16) for my USDM Outback. Photos of your ride with them mounted up would be a nice bonus too :)

I've now done 30 000kms on mine, and they are great. Still heaps of tread left (will get around to measuring it soon).

My next tires will be BFG AT's, nice and big and chunky!

Well its been about 9,000km since they were put on, I survived a crazy trip into extreme 4wd ranges (Pathfinder with Coopers failed after nicking side wall) but have driven more on road than dirt than I first thought I would. Saying that, they are super quiet and handle all conditions well. Such a performance upgrade on the dirt its phenomenal, depending on how many km's I get out of the set (Tyres still rated very good) I would buy again.

Me too - my BFG's will be needing renewal soon. So far I've had approx 64K (kilometres) out of the 6 BFG (with alignment being knocked out regularly) versus 50K for 11 Yokos. The BFG do tend to get a little slippery in the wet when they are reaching end of life.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking down the Geo AT-S's, I love them, 30 000km with no rotating/alignments etc, still easilly over 60% tread left, probably more like 70% left. Really quiet tires, great grip on and offroad, not one puncture yet (touch wood) and they have kept me out of trouble in some pretty sticky (and slippery) situations.

Would I buy them again? Definately.

Am I going to buy them again? Probably not, I want to go back to a larger profile tire (car had 215x65r16 when I got it now running 215x60r16). And if go up to 215x70r16, it opens up a whole new range of tires. Plus big chunky tires just look so much cooler!

I did a 9000km trip (2/3 sealed, rest on good to terrible dirt, stone, gibbers, rocks, etc.) heavily loaded. Two punctures - staked at tread edge. Just under 8mm tread depth now. (New tyre has 10mm). The tread did not get cut on sharp rocks like the tyres on the Land Cruisers, although I was a lot lighter.
At that wear rate I will get 40km max, but I was happy with grip levels (only used in dry conditions). I would consider again.
