SNORKEL, would you buy one?

Would you buy a Forester-Specific snorkel?

SNORKEL UPDATE: 07/27/11

Final sanding has been completed and the first coat of paint has been applied. Again, this is not a functional snorkel, this is only the plug as to make a mold to create actual snorkels from. I'm making sure it has a perfect paint job so no defects are transferred to the mold (and so it doesn't stick to the mold too). I have a few more coats I need to apply, and I need to sand meticulously in-between the coats as well.

I will probably make a mold of the intake ram first to practice making the mold before I do the actual snorkel piece, but shape wise, it's done and it's ready for molding VERY soon. Stay tuned.

I am just a little bit excited! A bit of wee came out. :rotfl: Can't wait to see the end results of your efforts! And seriously if I don't sell my foz and get a disco I will be buying one of these off of you! Thanks

Thanks for the update Blue Fox :raz:
I must say that it's looking better & better every time I see it's progress :)

Regards
Mr Turbo

he told me the snorkel is finished... but he moved recently and the final process has to wait a little, hopefully the thing is finished till december!

Crossing my fingers, as I'm about to return to the Subaru Forester fold after three years in West Africa with a Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan X-trail (both of which were great but not nearly as nice as my old Subie).

Blue Fox was involved in a serious car accident just before Christmas & his Forry was totaled  You can read about it here

He has, from what I understand, bought another Forry.
But whether or not he contines with this project, I'm not sure.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Thats crazy, I just read his accident thread today. Sad story, but I'm stoked he was able to get another foz!

Hopefully he will be able to get back to the projects he had planned and have some good smiles:)

SNORKEL PROJECT STILL LIVES!

Sorry for the long delay. A LOT has happened over the past 10 months. Car crash, rehabilitation, new Foz, moved to a new state, new job, new life, new friends, the Subaru commercial, etc. Talk about eventful, lol.

Anyway, I'm proceeding with the snorkel, here's a little update.

So I figured I would tease people some more. These are the most recent shots of the snorkel about a week before I moved to Durango. In its finished state, ready for molding. This is what the final piece would look like (though, with a nice slightly textured matte-black finish and a grille over the intake ram).

My biggest hurdle is making/getting a mold that will allow for a strong bond of the two halves since it has to be a two-part mold. Can't have the thing splitting down the center. My other hurdle is HOW on earth it will be mounted to the car. If it's bolts, those bolts would have to be STATIC and a part of the snorkel itself. If not bolts, then I would have to embed threads. We'll see once the fiberglass shop takes a look at it.

The possibility of this thing being produced is pretty high at the moment. I have funds coming in from the crash settlement, and that will help with the cost of this mold (which I'm thinking is going to cost me $1000+ to get made). I would try, but I'm sure me trying to make the mold would just end up with an "eh" outcome and not up to my standards. A professional production mold would be best. Once I can assure that the output quality is high, and we can figure out the whole "mounting" thing, then it'll be all green lights from there!

Another worry of mine is the testing part. I haven't been able to get it to the point of actually mounting it and testing it for wind noise, and to make sure it doesn't bog the engine (which I don't plan it to, being the entire snorkel is about an inch larger in circumference than the smallest part of the intake). But we'll see. I may just double-stick tape the crap out of it as is and go from there.

So here's some teaser pics to give you an idea of what it'd look like mounted. Two scoops are better than one.

This is what it looks like mated up with an SF. It fit VERY well. And with a rubber-foam backing, I'm sure it would look perfect.

Looks great! Some rivnuts / nutserts would attach it
