'84 hatch project...

broke the hatch in offroad style..

Last Sunday I took the Hatch out on it's virgin offroad adventure..@ Tillamook state forest with a friend.

I was blown away with the capabilities of the hatch far and above what my outback could ever achieve..:lildevil:

Here's a poser shot..

The carnage...the second time around on a nice hillclimb.
Mind you the cv has 173,000 miles on it.

I still went wheelin' the rest of the day and drove all week commuting to work.
I'm gettin' two more cv's today at upullit...so I have one spare.
All my hard work has paid off..

YEEEEEEEHAWWWWW!!! Looks great out there!!! With that welded rear diff. do you think you'll be eating up axles??? Seem I remember someone on ultimatesubaru had a welded diff. and he would remove one axle for DD and install it for off road, but with the car in FWD would it really matter???

Actually , I really don't think it matters much.
I just put too much power down on a rough spot bouncing and when the one axle was in the air the other caught {{ bam}}
The only advantage to removing the axle is the turning radius is shortened.

AND less strain on the drive train when on the black top - tyre's won't scrub out and the CV's will generallly last longer...

Scooby, have you got plans to get rid of the EA81 donk? I realise this is a low budget unit and it looks like you've done very well with that goal so far, just wondering if you're hunting for more grunt yet... When you do, check out hatchie. I love the look of the hatch, we don't get them in oz unless its a very rare grey import!

Keep up the good work, I also love the photography!

Cheers

I plan on keeping the ea-81 for now it runs great! The ea81 is very torquey(add a weber 32/26 dgev + hi voltage coil it'll add a few ponies) .
Later on I plan to upgrade to an EJ22 . I loved hatchie's sweet ride...abit more work than my busy schedule has time for..let alone funds..

Cheers

fog lights & outback seat upgrade

This weekend I found some PIAA 520 fog lamps for $60 . They were chrome . I painted the covers black.

Next was the seat mount reconditioning(cutting fabricating, welding plates, nut mounts.)
I found a set of '98 outback seats for $48 at u-pullit.
I still need to clean the fabric abit.

The old seats were broken down after 24yrs of use.
I'm happy with the comfort and safety factor as well..

i had one of these, bought it off an old bloke, saw it driving round just by chance, wrecked an MY wagon to get parts for it but when the wreckers came to pick up the shell of the wagon, the *******s also took the hatch. by the time i found they'd taken it, it had a couple of other cars stacked on top of it... RIP

was an 82, factory 4wd dual range, still had dealership stickers from japan on it and the original safety flare. ill post a couple of pics when i get home from work (tuesday)

I only know of 2 others in WA...

Vidler, bros and I were just reading that post about the scrap dudes... ouch - we were thinking you'd beat the crap outta them!

And I see hatchie hiding in the background like 'where's wally'

lol. went round after a nasty phone call, when i rocked up there was about 5 blokes there and a few more rocked up on harleys etc etc so it wasnt a good idea to start anything, specially with those who have access to big machines that crush cars into small cubes....

no scubu suba

That is one bad arse Hatch!!!

I think, perhaps, a snorkel is in order?

Around here the mudholes will swallow a hatch...even some big 3/4ton trucks with 44's and over a foot of lift get enveloped ..
Unless you've got radar whilst traveling into a mudhole ...I've seen boulders and logs submerged that will smash a differential or strand you in waist deep muck...That much said . I prefer to keep my vintage roo in tip top condition .

I've never been much for mudholes as the wear & tear on rigs is really harsh...So a snorkel is not in order. However, it does help for dusty conditions.
The fact I like tight trails that fold your mirrors in and tweak your overheads for aircraft search lights. I'm afraid I'd rip off a snorkel on a tree branch..or pack full of snow whilst traveling through the woods of snow ladden trees..

I can definitely understand your point. I don't care for wallowing in the mud for the very same reasons. I do think a snorkel would look really cool on that car though, but if you have no need for it then no reason to do it and I didn't think about ripping it off on a tree branch, another good point.:)

My latest upgrade was an H6 ...wait for it...

Alternator swap.

Given the ej22's 70amps wasn't cutting it with a winch, overheads, fogs...etc..
It was time to go for the 100amp conversion.

The H6 alt. was a drop in swap fitment wise. I am not running a/c as well.
I did have to rewire the plug to work with H6 alt.
I ran a 4ga wire direct to the possitive battery post using an inline 100amp fuse for protection.
The pulley had an extra rib on it. However, alignment was spot on .

I'll post pics soon..
