Being that funds are low and I've done about all I can with my lifted outback ....I just had to find a cheap project for maximum fun in the woods...

My diamond in the ruff began with a rattle canned extra black (yellow) '84 gl hatchback 2dr, 4spd, 4wd, Dual range ,170,000 miles. My cost $250....USD purchased 22/8/08.

The good: motor runs great!
body straight
good tags..
Clean title
lights, clock, all functions work...
half tank of gas...
adjustable suspension is adjusted to the highest setting..
has original owners manual, booklets...

Now the bad :No keys...
bad clutch
bad battery
front brake hoses cracked to the core!
a non working blower motor,
torn R.F CV boot(inner)grease slung all over...
hatch struts blown...will give ye an occasional bonk...
dog had it's way with the back seat:lildevil:
oil pan leaks
head gaskets leak oil
valve covers leak
radiator leaks..
radio inop..
slow leak in one tyre...
locking gas cap fubar'd
missing rear wiper
left rear window leaks when it rains...latch problem...
missing scissor jack crank handle
missing rear cargo cover

Ok...getting down to business...

I got all the doors rekeyed..$29 except ign. sw.
(starts w/ screwdriver..)
new battery $55
refurbished battery holdown & new j-hooks $4
locking gas cap $12
new rear window wiper $5
fixed radio...sounds great for am/fm...
PSI test cooling system...radiator leak..
pulled radiator to solder.
adjusted alternator belt
replaced blower motor from U-pullit..$15
pulled engine...for reseal/clutch
pressure washed engine bay/trans.
press. wash engine..
replaced rear main seal $21
resurfaced flywheel, clutch kit install $90
found Peugeot 505 14" steelies aka "PUGS" 4X140mm at
U-pullit $19 each with 185/70R14 tires!!!2 bad tires/2 good
drained rear diff. and welded carrier gears (locked rear diff)
resealed and refilled rear diff..

Now I just to need to get her dirty...

I bet you can't wait for that. You'll have to let us know how it goes offroad when you do take it out for a play.

That looks like fun on 4 wheels. What was the final cost? I can't believe the cheap parts over there.

tread/rims

Looks much better!
Plans for new tread/rims?

Thx

Actually those are the new rims (used Pugeout 505 14" steelies) and very sought after as the bolt pattern is 4 X 140mm. It used to have spoked 13" rims..w/185/70R13's.

For tires, I opted for a set of Cooper Weathermaster st II's(studless snowtires) 185/70R14's for their aggressive tread . note: the tyre on the top is the style I used

Otherwise I'd have to choke on about $600 for super swampers M/T...

Mind you , It's a low budget wheeler project..The goal is to get out and have fun with a fatter wallet...

Eventually , I will get a set of 15" chev/toyota six lug wheels and redrilled hubs. Then the mud terrains..

cost/ cheap parts

I have yet to tally the final cost as am not finished yet. I hope to keep it under a grand..
Some parts are cheap . However, they are increasingly hard to find . these 80's generation of cars are being crushed faster than you can pull the parts off them...(recycled steel demand).
