Feeling the pain at the pump?

And don't think the 'cheap' fuel (LPG) is really cheap any more. Filled my HR Holden ute up the other day at 75.9 cpl. With a 115lt usable tank, I put in 113.5lt and it cost me over $86. Ouch!

Beigewagon.

It was for me today :eviltoyou:
Filled my Forry (with premium 98) this morning on the way to work & it cost a tad over $70  :furious:  & I was only down just over 420km's

Regards
Mr Turbo

I filled my Forrie (with 98 premium) yesterday in Hornsby... $1.68/L and it cost me $82 bucks to fill, after about 400km

Sooo.... Oil price per barrel is back down to where it was (thanks to the wonderful people running our country) when gas was $2.70 a gallon. Here we are still at $3.50-$3.60 a gallon.. I'm wondering when these prices will fall like they should. :furious:

Lets see, oil goes from the country of origion, to whoever pumps it out, to the transporters, to the refiners, to the distributors, to the retailers to your tank.

Not much there for the goverment to step into considering how much oil is out of their control, especially with speculators involved.

Here it is around $1.45/litre for low octane fuel- our government takes around 60 cents of that, very little of which is put back into roads. We have almost no competition here- Caltex and Shell have been handed the market by the Government and it's watchdog. Mobil have been forced out- BP must be on borrowed time. I remember as a kid brands that are no longer seen- Golden Fleece, Amoco, Esso, Ampol and Total are all gone- as has the competition and the cheaper prices. It doesn't seem all that long ago when oil was under US$30 a barrel.

$2.25/Litre, My 200kw atw wrx get ~400kms/tank @ around $110+ to fill...Id love to pay $3.50/gal.

this is over in NZ

Not anytime soon. We're still paying $1.40+ for regular unleaded (91RON) when the price of oil per barrel was at ~$130, now it's dropped back a huge amount but the companies don't want to drop the price with it. Prices will stay high to increase profit and our lovely government wants a higher price as we also pay a 10% GST on top of the ~50cpl fuel excise tax. Higher fuel price = more money to the Government...

Id love to pay $3.50/gal.

Me too! This would equate to less than a $1 per litre over here!! Those were the days that we'll never see again

Cheers

How big are your fuel tanks? This is what gets me with current new vehicle ads - The holden one especially "900km to a single tank" yet "the tank" could be 200 litres, not really good economy eh?

My L has a 60 litre tank which from what I've heard is pretty big by subi standards! Fuelling up when low could cost me ~$80 on occasions depending on where I'm forced to get my fuel from if there's not a choice...

Cheers

Bennie

Both my Impreza and Forrie have 60 litre fuel tanks. The Holden's are surprisingly economical- especially on the highway from what I have been told

Yeah they aren't too bad. I thin k they have an 85L tank and get something like 10l/100km on the highway. The newer ones anyway. They are very aero dynamic compared to our lifted Subie 4x4's though.

The Impreza is about the same as the Forrie though for fuel economy- but is substantially quicker obviously. The bigger wing on the impreza also makes a noticeable impact on fuel economy. I thought the Commodore had a 73 litre fuel tank

Our VZ Berlina had a 75l tank - could normally sit just under 9.5-10 on 110 (even less depending on other conditions). I would put the old 3.8 above the 3.6 though - it was an old engine, but it was a nicer cruising motor than the new Alloytech (we had 2 3.8's and a 3.6) We always used to laugh at people on the highway saving money with their Echo, Yaris, Getz's etc who were doing 115 but they were saving money because it was a small engined car - so they scream past doing 3000 rpm+ whilst the 'gas guzzling' Commodore would be doing 1750rpm, with cruise on, and getting better fuel economy - massive false economy IMO if you do a lot of highway work to buy anything smaller than a 2.0 4 cyl.
Not true and certainly not my experience. We hired a Hyundai Getz 1.4 a couple of years ago and did about 3000km of country cruising sitting around 110km/h and got 6.4L/100km overall. It had no trouble keeping up with the traffic around rural Victoria.

Unleaded 91 has been 130.9c/L here in Toowoomba for the last week. Makes you wonder how the prices are decided. There was a report recently that Toowoomba has had the lowest fuel prices in Australia for the last few years and it is certainly what I have observed in my travels all over australia. The claimed reason is strong independents & high fuel sales.

Thats true with some of the smaller car, how you get shocking fuel economy on the highway. Plus in say a 1.4l Getz you can't overtake either as you have no power
My Foz does 3500rpm at 120km/hr and I get around 8l/100km like that. Not too bad considering I have a roof basket on and big A/T tyres. Overtaking isn't really an issue as I just drop it back to 4th, but sometimes you don't have the power to get past on hills, or get past 3 cars at once etc...
I only have a 2.0l engine but I wouldn't go with anything smaller, in any kind of car. I can usually get 650-700km to a tank fueling up 55l when sitting on the speed limit during highway runs :D

I was in Perth and Adelaide recently, and had a Getz for a hire car. The manual was almost bearable to drive- the auto a joke. And both looked terrible compared to say a Fiesta or many other Euro minis. I nearly got cleaned up because I had no idea how slow a car can be. I'd have the VE any day over a Getz if they were both autos. Autos just don't work on such small cars. Not sure they're that flash on bigger cars either but that's another issue. Big cars are so much better than they used to be for fuel economy, yet have performance unheard of years ago as well. But they're just too heavy to be really enjoyable most of the time.

I didn't find the performance of the 1.4 Getz too bad and a 1.6 version I also drove almost felt peppy. I also drove a 1.6 Kia Rio auto from Sydney to the Gold Coast last year and averaged 6.6L/100km and a 1.3 Diahatsu Charade I used to get around in years ago would average around 5.5L/100km on the open road. Yeah, they don't accelerate like a larger car but they certainly get much better fuel consumption, even on the open road. And that 1.4 Getz was a much better drive than the original 1.5 Ford Laser and 1.6 VW GolfI owned in the early 80's.
