When you do replace, instead of the standard 2x4's, use a product called SmartTrim. It's an LP product available at home depot or lowes. Comes pre-primed & you can pick it up in a 1"x4". Has a 50yr warranty against rotting/warping - same warranty as hardi-plank.

Thanks for the info! I was already thinking about getting something that was treated in some way, so I wouldn't be doing this every few years.

I'm a town planner, so always interested to see how rear yards work in different places. Most of what I have seen of the US has either low wire mesh side / rear fences or is open. I see you have high paling fences as we do in Aus.
Not sure if the practice in the US changed or perhaps the open sort on larger blocks with palings on unit development where privacy is more crucial.

Read this thread again & got to thinkin about this. Here's your basic picture of the modern day madness to cookie cutter neighborhods. Most neighborhoods going up anymore are by a few select developers (D.R Horton, KB Homes, Pulte,Ryland, Lennar, etc...) Their intentions are all the same. Offer 3-5 different models, and put them on lots where the homes are 10' apart. Older subdivisions have much more space and bigger lots. But you can scroll through this on google street view to see. Don't mean to offend anyone, but i will never live in a cookie cutter neighborhood! Madness i tell you!
If you're not familiar with google street view, you can actually click on the image, move the view, zoom in, click on the arrows like you are driving down the road yourself. Amazing tool for using to invade privacy of others
