215/70 16

I'm also running 215/70 16 tires on a 2004 XT. No problems with the spring perches, and only a little rubbing when at full lock. If you are in North America and still have the factory plastic molded splash guards, then the rears will rub ever so slightly when going over obstacles, but nothing a little buzz with a dremel won't fix. I just took all my mudguards off as they're useless anyway.

I've just been up to KMart Tyre and Auto at Southport (Gold Coast) and priced the Yoko ATS 215/60/16. Told him i had been quoted $230 each and he gave me a price of $220 each. I was a bit surprised really as i did not expect them to be much good as i have priced tyres with them before and they were hopeless.

Believe me Geolandars are worth every dollar.

To compare, i know of two cars, a ford ranger and a Bt-50, both essentially the same car. One had geolandars one duelers. The bt-50 with the geolandars got an incredible 70,000 km out of them! The duelers on the other hand are still going, however are nearly bald with only 28,000km on them.

Granted the ranger has over 600kg more weight on it but still there is a huge difference.

Geolandars perform slightly better than duelers offroad, but pretty much the same. Likewise on road.

The guy at Kmart Tyre and Auto at Southport (Gold Coast) told me that the Kmart at Robina had a new Laser wheel aligner and could do 4 wheel alignments so i just paid them a visit. Again i'm a bit surprised.
My new quote is $959 for 4 x Yoko 215/60/16 A/T-S's plus a 4 wheel alignment and 4 x balances on the whoopee do 'Hawkeye' balancer.
Apparently this balance is done differently to a normal balance and costs $7.50 per wheel.
I also get the same balance plus tyre rotation every 6 months or 10,000klms free up to 50,000klms.
Not bad really when i consider my first quote was $960 just for 4 tyres.

With a Gen 3 OB the places to watch for tyre clearance are:
- the front of the rear wheel arch - a 215/70-16 will only have 5mm clearance (It's 30mm with a 215/60-16)
- the rear suspension lower control arm - check the gap between tyre and arm - it's only about a finger width (say 12mm) on a 215/60-16 - you have to reach around the tyre to feel it.
- top spring perch/hat
- full lock front inside wheel arch.

225/16/60 is biggest legal tyre in Oz.
