i want a low range transmission in US willing to pay$$$

I was wondering ca.outbacker, what you have heard about our Falcons, utes and Holdens. I used to have a 1972 GT Falcon- a great car in it's day. The year before, they had a version which was the fastest 4 door production car in the world, and a good one sold last year I think for $800,000. Crazy.

As for the D/R box- have you tried NZ? I don't know if they have D/R but when I've been there there were plenty of Subarus around
Not sure which forum I saw it on - may have been AUSubaru, but there was someone recently who put some d/r boxes in a container and shipped them for a group of forum members in the U.S.

I believe there was someone who swapped a dual range EJ gearbox for a complete MY hatch in WA a couple of years ago... Crazy! But dunno if it actually went through.

All of this will be do-able. You just need to know what you need and how to get it to the US.

Pack and send has worked well for Giles in the UK (ausubi) who had a brumby halfcut sent to him through pack and send! His last aquistion with the help of forum members was a complete power steering setup for his brumby. As far as he knows he is the only fella in the UK with a brumby/brat/MV with factory AC and power steering!

If you contact scorpion in austraila they might be able to source the gearbox you're after, fit their low range (re-produced L series low range from what I understand) of 1.6 to 1 (L low is 1.59:1), they could check out the box and send it your way to have it fitted. It will cost you though.

What you'll need is the interior console, cable and mounts plus the lever for the hi/lo range, the gearselector boot that fits the hi/lo cable.

AFAIK the single range gearbox is the same length as the dual range units as the dual range tranfer gears are on the input shaft located above the front diff.

I'd look at sourcing the rear diff/axles in the US if they're different to what you have now (to make them match the gearbox), less packaging cost this way.

I don't know if your instruement cluster has the lights to display low range or not... Maybe look into this or have a plan on how you're going to have low range display once you've got the gearbox installed.

Cheers

Thanks Bennie for the info. I was curious about length and wanted to make sure I didn't forget anything on my trip Down.
I have contacted Scorpion but haven't heard back from them yet but hear it takes some time so we'll see.
Does anyone know if it's possible to change the ring gear out from the 3.9 to 4.11 like in the US single ranges? Would make the hunt easier if I didn't have to find the "special" trans. that was like 2 years only if I remember. Also would make it easier if I didn't have to swap out my rear diff as well as I might put in an LSD in the rear and don't necessarily want to go with the way old school GL Turbo LSD from the 80s.

You don't need to get the rear diff if you can source one locally with the same ratio. You will need to do your homework by finding out what the ratios were on various Oz spec cars that came with D/R. Overall final drive ratios might be say 4.1 and 4.44- are such ratios available in the US? If every ratio is available in the US, all you need do then is note the ratio on the gearbox and source the US diff. The best source for the diff would probably be an 02 onwards WRX. In Australia, WRX's from 94-01 inclusive ran 3.9 final drive (3.54 in the actual rear diff), then went to shorter gearing- which may be the same ratio as what you may need. Here, until at least 2008 they all came with some form of LSD- normally VLSD or Suretrac. I have heard though that US spec WRX's are de-specced compared to Oz spec WRX's, with smaller brakes, rims, tyres etc, so they may not have LSD rear diffs?

It's easy enough to change the ratio's in the box, we changed the crown wheel & pinion in mine from 3.9 to 4.44 for better gearing but a small area of the ring gear had to be shaved off to stop it hitting the opposing gear set, obviously did the same with the diff but it would be much easier to change your rear diff ratio's than the box ratio's.

Thanks guys. I believe I'm going to be on the lookout for the prized 97-98 Forester D/r with the 4.11 ring gear as that's what I have now (gear wise that is) and then just get the Scorpion lower gear set for the Low Range. Am I correct on this? Any other models have the 4.11 final drive? I know for the US spec cars cars101.com has a lot of info but cannot find a transmission chart for the Oz spec rides to make it easy to look at the options.

Forgot to ask, does anyone have a pic of the "Low Range" dash light lit up on their dash on a Gen 2 Loyale, 1996-1998 preferred? Curious as to where it is on the cluster. Thanks.

The owners manual does not list gear ratios so I don't know what mine are.

Here's a link on how to take the low range out of the EA82 d/r and drop it into an EJ d/r box:

https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=97653

I've got an EA82 D/R AND an EJ D/R originally from Australia. Planning on dropping the EA82 low into the EJ gearbox, find a 3.9 final drive rear end and bam!!! Mountain climbing machine! I MAY have found an EA82 gold mine near my place way back in the woods. I'll be checking it out. I'm grabbing every d/r I can find if there are any to be had.

One possible source of information on gear ratios of Oz spec cars is Wheels magazine. They list such things on their reviews-or maybe have them on file

Is there any way to tell what the ratio is for the transmission by just looking at the transmission by itself (serial numbers or anything)? I might have a line on one but it's already out of the car and only ID is the transmission serial number. Also, what does the center console piece run for a 1997 Australian Legacy that had the D/r (just the plastic part with the hole for the lever)?

There is a list that gives the ratios for each gearbox part number, but I don't know now where it is. Here are some photos that may assist- there are off my MY04 Forrie but the Outback s probably the same- as indeed I imagine all D/R Subarus are

This ebay listing might be the go... - its a 2003 forester gearbox with matching rear diff. It doesn't say how far the box has travelled though :( Looks like it's spent a bit of time on the pintan (red earth)
