I don't know it it happens in the US, but for things like this you might want to look at getting a JDM half cut from the wreckers. As long as they include the rear diff you can get along with what you want some other spares as well. Do they import JDM half cuts into the US? We found it a cost effective way of sourcing parts for our rally car. JDM is of course RHD.

Well it would not be need to be an old one. Being a 2001 model anything up to current day from about 1999 would bolt right in.

yeah i was hoping to get something newer like 2001+

i dont even know where to start with getting a JDM one?

any suggestions on where to start my shopping?

thanks guys

Anything from 89 Legacy forward will bolt right in, it'll just be a 4 bolt box up to about 99, then they went to the 8 bolt set up but that's an easy straight forward bolt change at the starter motor to change, I'd be looking more at mileage than age.

Google is your friend. Also, try some of the US Subaru sites (including for the Legacy and Outback) as they have a wealth of knowledge, and there would be bound to be members of those sites who could point you at wreckers who deal in Subaru parts.

Are you looking for the 1990 and newer "full time Dual Range" that was available in Australia and South America but not US or the earlier part time D/r? Come this fall my plan is to pick up a Australian D/r while down there for my brothers wedding so I'll be starting a thread just like this in a few months as I might have a shipping hook up and might be willing to see about a GB or something if I can figure a way to do it without a lot of stress or hassle.
So, to those members in Australia, how would a US citizen go about getting a transmission from Down Under? Any websites you would recommend or avoid?

Welcome CA Outbacker to ORS- where in Oz will you be? I doubt there would be any issues with exporting (other than maybe proof of ownership)- it'd be more of a matter of what customs and quarantine issues there are in the US.

I'll be in the Sydney area October of this year. Don't care about customs and quarantine as I'll wait as long as necessary as long as its on the same continent as me. I just wonder about reputable places in a "new world" as I don't want to be taken advantage of and don't know where to begin as I'd need a 4.11 rear gear and the lowest possible low range gear set available whether aftermarket or stock.

It's mentioned elsewhere that it is quite difficult to look at a gearbox and say it is good or bad, unless really obviously bad. What I can do is arrange for a Subaru specialist mechanic to inspect the gearbox before you export it. But where to get it? Well, maybe someone on this forum is aware of a specific box closer to the time. I have a wrecker I go to who has quite a bit of Subaru stuff, but we are a fair way from October. I'll ask if he has one and see what he says. No idea when I'll be there next. In the meantime, check the websites and let us know. While some wreckers use freecall (1800)and local call from anywhere numbers (13 or 1300), Sydney numbers will have an area code of "02. and the very next number will be a "9" or "8".

Your best chance would be an early Legacy or Impreza box found locally, maybe have a look on dirtyimpreza.com, the early dual range boxes usually sell for between $250 & $350 here, maybe try Canada??????

Thanks for the info man, I'll be keeping your info for the future.
d_generate, the Legacy and Imps in the US are single range only, 1988 or 9 was the last year for the Dual Range. I heard a rumor that there are a couple EJ D/rs in the US, but it'd be like finding the needle in the barn filled with hay. Ya'll down under and South America (Brazil at least) got the D/rs only, Canada was a no go and Japan only did it for a minute. Ya'll are the EXTREMELY lucky ones to get the goods and sweet rides too (later Falcons, ALL Utes, most Holdens and I'm sure a lot more).
garrettG, you are not the only one, there are a ton of people out here in the US who'd love to have the EJ D/r, but the cost is the hard part.

If someone here had half a brain they'd fill a couple of pallets with them & send them over, sounds like our septic friends would pay well lol.
( septic, short for septic tank = Yank ) rhyming slang, so don't take offense that we think "all" of you are full of sh1t.

I was wondering ca.outbacker, what you have heard about our Falcons, utes and Holdens. I used to have a 1972 GT Falcon- a great car in it's day. The year before, they had a version which was the fastest 4 door production car in the world, and a good one sold last year I think for $800,000. Crazy.

As for the D/R box- have you tried NZ? I don't know if they have D/R but when I've been there there were plenty of Subarus around

For our friends in the US. While visiting a wrecker today, I found he has 2 D/R gearboxes in stock, and as you know you will need the rear diff to go with it. Because the rear diff can be "male" or "female" with regards the rear axles, if you want the box, diff and axles you are looking at between $1000-$1200. Obviously less if you don't want the axles. Looking at my own car, you will need to either modify your existing centre console or get one with the cutout and label which tells you where high and low range are. On RHD cars, the handbrake is right next to the driver, with the low range lever on the other side. If on LHD cars the handbrake is right next to the driver, you will need to also get a RHD handbrake lever and console. You may also need to cut a hole in the transmission tunnel for the second lever? I did not ask about talishafts as I do not know if the D/R box is the same length as a S/R box. Which means you either need to get the tailshaft also or modify your existing one if the length is different. Finally, with different gearing you can assume your speedo will be out. Then there is the cost of freight. Hope this helps
