My kids just flew me up to the Gold Coast on the weekend as a present for next weeks birthday.
I wanted to travel early Sat and return late Sun so booked Virgin on the way up and Tiger on the way back.
Virgin was no problems. Internet booking, web check-in...want to pick a seat?....no worries!!! No extra charges, all good.
Tiger on the other hand!!!!!! Book online...no worries....want to pick a seat? ....ok...hit the button....$16.60 extra charge. Might have been there somewhere in the fine print but i didn't see it. Do a web check in....no worries.....whooops....Web check not valid!!! Thats ok i'll just go to the counter on arrival. $25 extra charge for not doing a web checkin. They were not taking excuses. My fault as it was a condition of the fare!!!!
I was talking to the people sitting next to me and guess what...same happened to them. The people behind us spoke up and the same happened to them!!!!
While i was waiting at Tullamarine i was chatting to someone and mentioned i was coming back on Tiger and he said 'good luck'. Turns out they will cancel the flights at the drop of a hat if there are not enough passengers.
When i got to the Gold Coast and was having a smoke outside waiting to get picked up,chatting to someone else....same story.
The guy at Andrews car park told me the same thing. No end of problems with Tiger arrivals. He said Jetstar cause a few problems also but Virgin was the most reliable.
NEVER AGAIN with Tiger. They are sneaky and dishonest.:yell::yell::yell:

report to ACCC?
I'll stick to Tiger beer (just got back from KL)

yep. ive travelled with tiger a few times.. and would do it again, one BIG lesson I learnt is not reading (i was in a rush booking tickets in last minute) thinking it'll leave on the friday and come back on sunday, tiger automatically changed to saturday and i booked it without looking and I got to the airport on friday noon with the ticket and check in and it wasnt valid, and thought strange... until i FINE read the dates and times.. oh sh.... so ended up booking virgin 3x as much what i shouldve paid!
Cheers

Did you not ever see that TV programme that used to be on telly every week? All this and more was aired every week. Was it called Airways??? Not sure, but it was on channel 7 during prime time.

You get what you pay for? Its a bare basic service airline, nothing sneaky or dishonest about it. Counter check-in is cleary an extra $25, second page of the booking process. Did you try calling customer service about the failed web check in? Happened to me and i had it sorted out over the phone. Seat fees are pretty clear on the seat selector page, complete with colour coded sections and relevant prices.

Sorry but i get sick of Tiger bashers. I haven't seen a complaint myself yet which would not have been avoided with a bit of due diligance. My family and i get $30 flights from Melbourne to Mackay and I get to see my nieces much more than i would other wise. If it means Tiger have to be hard asses so i can have a $30 fair then i thinks thats a pretty good deal.

Yes I remember that show. I think the airline was called "Star" or "Cheap Star" or something like that.
Thanks for the heads up silver.

No Damo, the airline was definitely Tiger, I'm just not sure of the name of the TV show.

I agree. There have been maybe one or two things I might disagree with, but then I don't fly Tiger. The first question I asked when Tiger offered such cheap prices is "What's the Catch?" There always is one (at least), that's expected. Tiger is good for competition as it keeps others on their toes.

I have not flown for over 30 years. It was all new to me. I could'nt even find Andrews car parking. All i'm saying is that i had trouble with Tiger and managed to do everything that i had to with Virgin with no hassels whatsoever. No extra charges etc.
As far as reading the fine print...yeah sure...i always read the fine print on insurance policies and instructions on how to operate stuff:rotfl::rotfl:
There was no difference in the ORIGINAL price i paid for the tickets and i know there are no frills on the flights. It appears that they have a reputation for stuffing things up. For complete strangers to only have bad things to say speaks for itself in my book.
The flight and cabin crew was good.
Had to laugh when someone in the check in queue commented that 'at least there are no camera crews here'.
Everybody has a choice. My experience with them was bad. I'll never use them again.

My mistake, they were NOT called "Star" or "Cheap Star" it was "EasyJet".

No Damo, the airline was definitely Tiger, I'm just not sure of the name of the TV show.

There were actually 2x shows that were very similar.
One show was called "Airline" (UK TV series) & the other was called Airline USA.
The one that I remember seeing with all the stuff ups & upset passengers which was the UK TV series who were flying with "EasyJet".

I've flown Tiger to Melbourne. I didn't have any problems with them, except for the fact I accidentally clicked Monday return, rather than Sunday. But that was my error, not theirs. Plus the extra day was good anyway, more time to explore.

Joel

I just want to make a couple of points here. First it pays to read the posts. I did not complain about the 'product'. Both flights were good. In fact i reckon the Tiger seats...A320...were better than the Virgin seats...737. Maybe a touch more leg room with Virgin. Both cabin crews were excellant.
As far as 'you get what you pay for', clear me up on what that is supposed to mean. I did not mention what i paid. If i took up an offer of say, $20 for a flight does that mean somehow i should expect crap service? I got EXACTLY what i wanted on both flights and used 2 different airlines because of the times they left/arrived. You simply can't have bad service on the flight because there is none except a trolley with overpriced stuff on offer.
My beef is with the 'experience'.
I had no problem at all with Virgin as far as the booking process goes.I can't be sure that there would have been an extra charge if i did not do a 'web check in'. It was more or less an accident that i did it. After i had completed it with NO PROBLEMS i was asked if i wanted to pick a seat which i did and it cost nothing.
Contrast that with Tiger. Picked my flight, was asked if i wanted to pick a seat, which i did, cost $16.60. Could have been something there that said a 'service charge' would apply. I didn't see it. Maybe it was even a credit charge fee. I'm not that sure. Anyway, after a return visit to see if they had a web check in,which they did, i tried to do it and it advised me my attempt was 'invalid'. There was no clear and precise message that i need to print this page or i would be charged $25 at the check in counter.
A complete stranger in the Virgin lounge wishes me good luck on my return flight with them and tells me they cancel flights at the drop of a hat.
While i am waiting for my lift at the Gold Coast and chatting to 2 people having a smoke, the lady, who worked at the terminal told me they have a 'shocking' reputation. The bloke, who said he travels a lot from Darwin, told me they are 'rubbish' and the same story about cancelling flights. He said he uses Virgin.
The 2 people next to me on the Tiger flight had the same trouble with the web check in and got stung $25 each. The people behind us heard us talking and told us the same thing happened to them. As we were walking out of the terminal a lady came up to us,turns out she was sitting opposite us, and the same thing happened to her.
The guy at Andrews car park said he can't wait until they move to Avalon because he has such trouble with late arrivals or 'if they turn up'.
He said lots of Corporates use Virgin.
When i was down my local Post Office today and bought the subject up he told me he has heard plenty of complaints about Tiger. I was talking to my supervisor at work and guess what? He has heard the same thing.
All just a coincidence??? I reckon not.
I have worked in retail for over 30years. In my opinion Tiger ARE dishonest in their business. It appears they are playing the odds that they will catch you out.
If i sell somebody an apple in my shop and ask the customer if they would like a bag and sting them extra at the check out, that is dishonest.
If i print in very fine print in a corner of a sign that you will be charged extra for a bag, that is unethical.
If unethical practises are entrenched in a business philosphy, that is dishonest.
I can only go on my experiences plus have enough of an open mind to listen to other people with more experience than me.
Tiger are rubbish,i will not use them again.

I don't know the US very well, so perhaps you can provide perspective. Our most popular route is Sydney-Melbourne, a distance of say 1200 km's. What would it cost to go between 2 cities in the US of around 3-4 million people over that distance?

I notice Jetstar is ofering deals Sydney to Auckland for $169 one way, but with no check in luggage. I wonder how many people would want to travel overseas with just carry on luggage? I'd rather fly Qantas for $200-$250 with luggage and better service. I certainly won't fly Air New Zealand again after paying a premium price and they ran out of food.

Thats the problem with US airlines, no two people pay the exactly same fare. Fares depend upon time of travel, time of booking, what class, flying weekends, staying over a weekend, leaving on a firday or monday, whatever strikes the airlines fancy, the phase of the moon ....

You can be flying 3000 miles NY to LA for for 231/729/2247 USD (coach/flexable coach/1st class) each way 2 months in advance..

Same flight in 2 weeks 406-600/741-885/564-3000. Ranges depend upon time of day and how many seats they need to fill.

Now take that same flight to San Francisco it is 50.00-300 dollars cheaper fpr the same distance.

Now if I pick the same starting point (JFK) and fly to Salt Lake city (a less travled route and 800 miles shorter) the fare doubles.

Then if i fly from New York to Buffalo NY (Niagra falls area) the fare starts at 463/1199/2039. Now keep in mind that is to fly someplace where it takes 9 hrs to drive and is within the same state.

And you can book at 9:10 am and have the prices change from the prices at 9:00 am.

thats why I can not give a straight answer, as we do not know ourselves.

PS: this does not include luggae fees, booking fees, fees for booking by ohone or talking to an agent, taxes and God knows what else.

Sounds like pick a price out of the hat.
