i have to disagree with the power on sand theroy. it might be good on firmish sand but when you've got soft deeper sand you really need a steddy pace with high revs. fast spinnig wheels will dig you in. i reckon low range is much better suited for sand

so what do you recommend/suggest?
im leaning toward the 3.0L outback. and i have a liberty b4 now so i would prefer the lux in the outback. just wish they did them in a manual

I agree with eden - if it were a manual, but we're talking auto which is far more controllable on sand or in any slow, crawling situation.

Have a look here:

but u need power/torque to get up hills ie sand dunes, is this not correct?
how do you keep hi revs in an auto? wont it just change up a gear? im assuming yous are talking about putting it in a low gear not Drive?
i just feel in my previous cars the dual range manual kicked arse over the non d/r auto. both of these where the L series. but the auto had no balls when i bought it.

kev, do u have a decreased life on any of your components due to increase clearance?

has anyone put the outbacks 2.5L manual box in the gen III 3L out back?

Power is fantastic in sand. My Forester could pull through sand the patrol would get bogged down in, purely because of the amount of power. And the auto was even better, as it provided continuous power, no backing off when more momentum is needed, and unlike the patrol that needs low range in the super soft stuff to get moving, the auto could just creep off.
I can assure you, if even revs wasn't cutting it, you put your foot down and it would take off.
My brother has put a supercharged v6 in his pajero, simply because power on sand is awesome.

Power is great, but momentum and traction is key.

Correct, usually 2nd or 3rd. Sometimes start run up in D or 3 to build momentum then change back to 2 as you hit the dune face.

Probably a little but more due to heavy offroad use.

When we have done runs with early model Subaru's like the "L" Series, the extra power even a NA Forester had over them was very noticeable on the road.
