Electronic Rust/Corrosion Inhibitors

G'day Lads,

I was hoping someone out there might have some information/recommendations on electronic rust inhibitors.

I reason that they must be a good idea, especially if you are doing water crossings or mud running and that. But I have also heard that its a waste of money, tests aren't conclusive and other stuff, but as per usual, thought I would summon the 'brainstrust' of the forum...

I've got an ERPS system fitted to the Toyota that I just bought. Is it doing anything to prevent rust? Wouldn't have clue, but meant to be good to slow the tin worm down.
 
I have an ERPS and was sceptical at first but after 8 years of water, mud, sand, sea and salt not a trace of rust even where I've drilled holes in the car. I'm a believer!

I have one fitted from the dealer on my small car (Corolla) since I bought it about 10 years ago and still have no sign of any rust on the car.

The area inside the petrol well of my Forester started to rust six months after I bought it, I tried to fix it initially (removed the rust, painted with antirust stuff then repainted with the paint bought from the dealer. The rust came back after a year or so and was worse than before, got repaired under waranty but then I bought and installed one of this (from my memory is the one on the link as I remember I actually went to the house of this guy in North Fremantle ) about 18 months ago and I do not see any sign of rust since. :raz:
 
Yes, as far as my memory serves me from Uni days, this is well proven and quite a simple solution. Provided you have it installed properly and the electrical current is adequately covering the vehicle chassis, it works no worries...

Sorry to revive an old thread. Looking at buying one of these from ERPS on the Gold Coast here.

Kevin, do you do any other rust prevention methods before and after hitting the sand?

Does your car contact the salt water? I assume you give it a good rinse at the end of the trip?

I know the science of this product backs it up and it makes sense, but seeing so many skeptics (and false advertising over the years) has really made me edgy on this one and it would be a difficult thing to gamble.
 
Yes, I give it a good wash. Yes, it's been in salt water, especially one incident on Fraser when someone in front of me hesitated and we got swamped by a wave.

I've also installed one in my Triton.
 
It sure was! We were bobbing at one point! Kept the power on are all was OK. :surprised:

Telecom uses cathodic protection in various corrosive situations, like at Port Pirie ... It works.

So do all outboard motors, and I presume the same goes for inboard motors used in a salt environment - they are called 'sacrifice blocks' colloquially.

Quite simply, the electrolytic and chemical reactions are transferred from the object being protected to something that is more reactive electrically or chemically than that object. These two things are basically the same. What the process is doing is preventing the transfer of electrons from the outer electron shell of the protected atoms/molecules to the electron shell of the reagent, transferring them from the sacrifice block to the reagent instead.
 
Do you guys have any preference between Couplertec or ERPS? Both are pretty convenient for me as both head offices are across the highway for me.

I'm leaning towards ERPS, seeming to hear more positive things about them.
 
I think they're one and the same; mine are ERPS but I feel sure the pads on the Foz say Couplertec but not sure about the pads on the Triton (will check later). Anyway, I'd recommend ERPS.
