Today I got an auto electrician to fit a switch to cut power to the radiator fans, and also cut the air conditioning. This way the fans would cut all togehter. He put in a relay. All was good I'd tested it at the shop, and I tried it again at home, but this time (and now every time I start the engine), the check engine light comes on, and the cruise light flashes. In the owners manual it says to take it to a mechanic, but doesn't explain what is going on. Any ideas?

Joel

borrow a OBDII scanner like a scangauge to check what the CEL is, take it back to the auto electrician as he should have one

Thanks Lefty, I'll be taking it back to the auto electrician for sure. I might have to invest in a scan guage, Troy and Kevin (amongst others) have them, I'll have to see what they're worth.

Joel

they are around $250 I think but there are cheaper ones out there
dealextreme.com has a few if you search for "obd scanner"

Thanks again Lefty, I took it back to the auto sparky and he put on his OBD scanner, where it was the relay fan voltage was low or something. So he cleared the error code, restarted the a few times, and all seems good.

Hi joel 57

The other thing i would do is splice one wire that's around the switch and put in a little buzzer so when you turn off the fans the buzzer goes off to let you know that the fans are off.
I had a switch in my old subaru it had a light to let you know the fans were off.
But you get busy and forget about it and it starts to over heat, So i went to Jacar and got a buzzer from there $2.50 i think cheap:)

Thanks Yarney, I forgot to mention, I got the Auto electrician to wire in a buzzer. It's really loud and annoying. Which is perfect for me not to forget. I got my buzzer from Jaycar too. I'd heard about other people's cars overheating, so I decided I wasn't getting the mod done without a buzzer.

Well done mate. The buzzer is a great idea. :)

What you could also do (depending on the type of switch) is put a Rocket/Missile switch cover on it aswell like I did. :iconwink:

Saves you from accidentally bumping it like I did once.

I thought about the missile switch, but I wanted to keep it looking flush and as standard as possible. I got the switch placed on the far right blank near the door (where the standard fog light switch is I believe) Plus the buzzer is so loud, I can't miss it. I think I'll have to buy a few more switches from the auto electrician, so they all look the same, when I add other accessories like driving lights etc in case I don't get them fitted there.

Joel, do you have any pics of your switch/es?

The blue lit switch (looks purple in the photo) is my spotlight switch, the middle two (orange and green) are currently not connected to anything, while the red lit switch is the fan kill switch with a buzzer. The scanguage is above the air vent.

My 'rocket launcher' switch location

Thanks fellas, I've discovered that I can fit 3 'rocket launcher' toggle switches below my CB radio / GPS unit, located in-dash where the 'sunnies' compartment used to be.

So, will have switches for fan cut-out with buzzer :lildevil:, driving / spot lights  and rear fog light :lildevil: immediately above my multi-gauge. 'Noice'!:discomonkey:
