Thoughts,comments etc on which 4x4

I think there is something to be said for the big wagons. Considering you could pay $60,000, probably more, for a tricked up dual cab Hilux the wagons look like good value. More comfortable, safer, lots of storage and still very capable.
A second hand Cruiser or Pajero,i'm not a Nissan fan, might well be worth looking at.
A couple of things against them, for me anyway, IS the fact that they are so big and fuel usage may be an issue. Other than that,no worries.
I might have a hunt around to see what they sell for.

Because of "Super Select" I would lean towards Mitsubishi - and it still has "Subi" in the name :iconwink:

The super select is a great feature for sure. My parents have recently bought an '03 Pajero and they think its great. They wanted a turbo diesel but couldn't find one with side airbags, so settled on a petrol model, which was about $8k cheaper as well. The pajeros are great cars, this is the 3rd one in the family (we had a '92 and '97 as well).

I wonder about diesels sometimes. I don't reckon they have that much going for them really. Besides lots of towing power that is. My mates Hilux has to get a new injector which is just a little $1,000 to replace. His is the No2 injector and not the No4 injector that was a common problem with the new motor until about 08 i when they upgraded it. It's only done 120,000.
People tell me that you get better resale....dearer to buy, dearer to sell sort of thing but logically that is no different to ...cheaper to buy, cheaper to sell.
Economically they is no way i can say that the Hilux is a world beater and diesel will be dearer than petrol in another year or two.
Towing and water crossings...that's about it in a diesels favour as far as i can see.
Even as far as the towing goes, in my case, it will not be as if i am lugging a 2.5t caravan. I reckon 1250/1500kgs will be my limit and i would be surprised if it got to the 1500kg mark.

Outback servos can run out of ULP well before they run out of diesel - just a thought. Generally speaking, diesels will last longer. Half a million K's is not uncommon.

Yep, were out slower, water crossing, and you can get diesel anywhere.

I just got the go ahead off the missus for a GU 4.2TD, so sometime over the next few months im going to have to let the subi go :(

Ok,Ok so there are a couple of good points about diesels:)
There are also some bad points. eg..the generally unknown problem of the first of the new series of Hiluxes with the No4 injector problem. The need to be extra careful with oil and filter changes. Much higher costs if something goes wrong eg $1,000 per injector and my understanding is that, roughly speaking, the new high pressure common rail injectors are only good for about 100,000klms. Dirty stinking messy fuel to use. The need to carry 2 different fuels if you are towing/carrying a boat. The fact that diesel will be dearer than petrol.
I have not really made up my mind and will talk to ARB and mobs like that as well as listen to what others have to say before i do anything.
As i have said, i don't need a hard core 4bie. Just a reliable and capable one. I want to be able to access out of the way places and such but i won't be getting my adventures published in any 4x4 magazine.:)

My old man was left stranded by low quality diesel. Which is a major issue for the new TD's. I know the VW's run about extreme PSI's through the injectors. Always food for thought.

Was a current lifted VW 2.8TD combi.

I will also be looking for a 4x4 wagon in the next year. I was thinking Pathfinder of Pajero.

Damn you for getting me thinking Silver. Just bought a Patrol. I'm a little worried it will be too capable for my needs, but i guess anything extra is just safety.

Sorry about that chief!!:)
Don't get me wrong though. It's still on the cards i will get a Mazda BT50. First step is to sell the camper....don't forget anyone....it IS for sale and is a GREAT bit of gear....and then have a good think about what i want to do.
I want to keep things as simple as possible yet have the eqipment to take advantage of what might pop up on my travels. That's part of the reason i want a better/bigger boat.
Realistically, i also need a fairly capable 4bie.
