Potential Vacuum/Air Locker for R160 - only 1 hurdle...

"R160 car" Is that what the Outback / Forrester is?
Presumably whichever are R160 could fit these units.

Judging from the translations, it seems that these will only fit the viscous diffs, not the 'open' or 'cable'? diffs. What could a 'cable diff' be - perhaps a mis-translation of hydraulic?

Why would this only fit as a replacement for a viscous diff? Which Subis have viscous diffs?
So who wants to be the 'test bed'?

R160 is very common and can be found in L series, Liberty, Impreza, Outback and Foresters, mostly earlier models, there is also R180 and R200 diffs, Ive noticed newer Liberty/Foz/OB & Impreza/WRX has R180. R180 is wider/longer. (if you plan to do an conversion - you will need R180 shafts as well)
To find LSD - VLSD can be found in most Turbo'd Subarus including Forester GT also most WRX - not all of them has it!.
CLSD can be found in L Series - getting VERY rare in these days now.

I hate to burst your bubble guys, but it looks to me like a spool. It would just lock the diff permanently, same as welding your current diff.

I don't think so,to many pieces for a spool.
Looks like some kind of auto-locker to me.

Just a heads-up, 4wd systems in Australia now produce an R180 'Lokka' centre for the Nissan R180A (for front diff of a D40 etc). This looks similar to the Lockright and earlier detroit centres. It may be adaptable to a Suby R180 diff, and could make an R180 rear diff conversion worthwhile (some Nissan blokes talk about using Suby R180 LSD centres). You'll have to do your own research from here... https://www.4wdsystems.com.au/index.php?id=29

So, on the basis of the info in post #21, these could potentially fit the 'later' Outbacks (Gen 3 or 4?). If so, !

An R180 conversion is a pretty involved process- one which I have underway for my WRX. It is not just a matter of sticking in the diff and away you go. Firstly, it will need to have the flange of the R180 changed to fit the tailshaft, or have the tailshaft modified. You will need R180 half shafts, and these come in at least 2 lengths, and there can be differences in their ends as to how they fit the diff. The R180 diff therefore will have different outputs as well, so you will need to pick the right one. The R180 shafts will not fit R160 hubs, so you will need R180 hubs. Some R180 hubs have no ABS provision. You will then need calipers from an MY01 WRX onwards, or STI from 01 onwards, and if you go the latter route you will need the front calipers, and new rims to accommodate them. If you go with the WRX rear calipers, you will need a different disc which while readily available is not on most catalogues- you have to know what to specify. You will also need a new handbrake cable. Make sure the hubs have all the handbrake parts because Subaru keep none or few of them in Oz and they cost heaps. As I said, it is involved and it is all too easy to get the wrong parts if you don't know what you need exactly. And anything R180 is expensive compared to R160, and is harder to source

Re my last post- that was for Impreza/Forester applications. R180 hubs for Liberty/Outback would be even rarer- if they exist at all. I suspect they do for some of the Liberty STI's, but not many of them in Oz. The only other alternative would be custom made half shafts.

That's fully involved process! Sounds like you're in the thick of it at the moment!!

Either way there is a possibility for a locker in a subi. The older subi's are easier to do - I met a guy on a trip who's got a toyota locker in the back of his subi  Can't wait to have the funds and parts to fit one to the back of my subi!

Love having a locked rear end, it makes subi's unstoppable in most situations. It becomes "point and shoot" 4wd'n then

I would love a simple R160 installation kit though! ARB said they're not interested as the centre is too small. Any excuse is good enough not to do one by them :(

Anyone got access to cnc equipment and know how to do it??

Cheers

Bennie
