Group buy SF & SG Forester, alloy sumpguards

So the alloy would be more prone to cracking but offer better protection because it is thicker? and the other could be belted back into shape but not as robust?

Mate if you should crack the SubX guard than you're in a whole lot of hurt. They are designed to withstand huge impacts without major deflection, cracking is a result of exceeding design loads or plan negligence either way the crack will most likely be the last thing you will notice after you remove the airbag from your nose :raz:

We can't compare these two dissimilar sump guards as the only commonality is, that they are made of an alloy and they are better than the plastic factory ones.

* one is a designed and engineered alloy casting made to an industry standard, with a warranty.
* one is fabricated from welded sheet of unknown alloy and temper with an unknown warranty.

Whether they are made of butter or titanium they both do a respectable job of protecting the sump, how long either will last is up to how you treat them.
I think you nailed it Tubeofglue, well said :bananatoast:
I suppose it depends on what you really want it for ..... IE: How hard you want to play. :iconwink: :)

I don't think anything was 'nailed' and it does pay to read what was ACTUALLY written and not what you THINK was written.
I can't see anyone comparing sumpguards but i can see questions being asked about the different sumpguards.
Probably because people are not sure what the advantages of one over the other are...people like me.
If i am going away for a year or two and will be going along the Gibb River Road and who knows where i want to make sure i have made the right choice.
I have no doubt that accidents are going to happen.
Ian, i would suggest that everbody on this forum would apprieciate what you have offered. It's part of what makes this forum so good.
As far as debates go...that's also part of this forum and GOOD debates perform a very useful purpose.:)

Silver, me old mate :raz: by asking questions you are comparing ;)

So your questions in order

So the alloy would be more prone to cracking but offer better protection because it is thicker? and the other could be belted back into shape but not as robust?

This is quite a difficult question, as one is an unknown, so.

The cast alloy unit is engineered/designed/warranted and as such must meet industry standards. The original engineer would not have access to multiple tong term fatigue testing of the guard so would have taken his information/data from known results of other similar products, So would it be prone to cracking? unlikely :)

Could the other be belted back to shape but not as robust,

lets theorize here.
If the fabricated guard is made from "o" condition 5000 series alloy, very common and widely used, then yes, to the beaten back into shape "daily".
robust? no as every time you form/beat this alloy you "cold work" it and the temper changes with the end result being cracking. Just like the copper hot water lines in your house, bend them one way and they will conform bend them back and they will crack, cold working. This also occurs due to cyclic stress.

If the fabricated guard is made from 5000 series alloy and of a temper of T3 or 4 then, yes to the robustness, only on minor/medium hits. Cracking would still occur as the material, being only 2 mm thick will still generate cyclic stress at the mounting points, over what time frame will it crack? Unknown :iconwink:

Is 2mm enought

Over soft sand, ample; over the gib river road, fine; off road or beaten tracks short term; all with ample maintenance checks

Ok, Me,
What Ian has offered is a great alternative to an expensive optional extra and if i did short term or daily trips i would be all over this offer, as i can inspect the guard and repair where required.

These guards do two things, protect the sump exhausts and maintains clearance and cooling around the sump, reduce the clearance (damage) and fill it up with spinerfix, sad days indeed

Hope this help your with your comparison, sorry questions :lildevil:

i dont care what anyone says, 2mm cast or 2mm rolled is NOT enough protection for the kind of driving we do. it sure is better than OEM plastic and might be ok for sand but the knocks i've copped it wouldn't of handled. so your saving $100, whooppee! is $100 worth your peace of mind? is it worth a pre tested and proved product? the only advantage it has is that it can be beaten backish into place, but can your sump and can your exhust? NO! i would rather pay an extra $200+ and get at least 5mm thick. it maybe heavier but no one will notice.

Thanks tubeofglue. Your answer to my questions is what i was after and as i have a fair idea of the Subaxtreme product i am now in a positon to COMPARE the two and make up my mind which one i will buy.
All going well i hope to be going to places i have never heard of so as best i can i want to avoid potential trouble. Thanks for the help.:)
