NSW Sep Camp - Abercrombie Overnighter Sept 09

LOL

Chuffed and honoured that you actually did it!

Maybe my Patrol will feel more like part of the Subaru family next time... a bit like a woolly mammoth feeling like it was born a racoon really but it works for me.;)

Thanks for the trip report, looks like it was one really great weekend, damn i had to miss it.
If that pic of the hill is representative it should be quite easy for my OBW.
Track doesn't look much rutted, graded even ?
lol wheel spins to get up them, no I don't think so, there is first gear !!! some
people seem to forget that.
I think method by wheel spins is bad anyway, damages the track too much,
if its wet can really wreck things, which is high motivation by National Parks to close tracks because people think wheel spins is fun, well it is, but but.

So I am wondering, just how much drive is there when one axle is missing ?
obviously not enough to get up those hills, but otherwise ?

looks like packing a spare axle is a good idea

again thanks for the report.:)

It is harder on the manual turbos avoiding wheels spin due to gearing and boost coming on. So you carry more revs which can mean wheels spin. When the car was on the steep slope, the front wheels were unloaded- relatively speaking- and the 4kg centre diff found it all to hard and sent most of the drive forward. When we got the car on the flat, there was drive but you risked the centre diff, especially with where we were.

Spare axles are well and good, but prevention is better than cure. The message seems to be avoid cheap parts, as Eden discovered someone had put el cheapo, dodgy brothers axles on his car. Erosion caused most of the issues on the steep inclines. Just as well the ruts caused by others were there in the wet sections, or life would have been far more painful.

i must say towards the end those rutts were a god send. just quietly i was a bit nervous (sh1tting my self)with just 3 wheels in decent. using the low range and feathered the hand brake did the trick;)

It should also be mentioned that in person it's a fair bit steeper than it looks in photos. Couple that with loose surface and minor ruts, humps, dips etc and the manuals had to use a bit more momentum than I would've liked to had I been driving my old MY06.

Thats for sure.
The funny thing with pics is, as apsilon states, they never seem to show how steep the hills really are.
Especially the ones that we drove up later that day, towards the end.

Couple of vids (my first!) Note there's no audio. Pretty happy with the arm the camera was mounted on. Very little shake. The only thing that would've made it better is a ball mount top instead of individual pan and tilt controls.

First one gives you an idea of the ride Edan had on the way out and some of the scenery we passed through with light snow.

Second one is one of the descents towards the end. I kept forgetting to record the really steep stuff as I was preoccupied of where I was driving but I think it gives some idea anyway.

Nice VIDS mate,

You mentioned you got that mount off ebay, got a link to the model or seller?

Very interested...

Great vids apsilon.
At the start of the first one you can really see that eden was sliding sideways out of that bog hole.

to be honest i wasn't sliding, i purpously swung it left so i could hook it hard right and get around the tree, after Rally radio'd in and said it was deep and to take it far on the right.

I know what you mean. I actually lost sight of that tree for a second as I went through myself.
Mainly due to the big splash from me hitting the water a tad too quickly. :o
