OneSixty's $500 SG Forester

retgw.png

Recently purchased a $500 SG Forester. This and the photos may raise a few questions so i'll answer them so you don't have to ask

Q: What is going to happen with the L-Series? A: Cleaning of the L-Series will be finished and then it will be sold.
Q: Why was it so cheap? A: The owner said the clutch wasn't working, now have found out it's just a missing clutch operating fork. Also won't run on it's own fuel and sounds like only 3 cylinders.
Q: Where is the airbox? A: The owner had taken the airbox off to inspect the clutch.

and it has been washed since the photos were taken

Nice one!

Haven't posted anything on here for a long time, mainly because nothing interesting has happened.

But, I'd like to share my opinion on the tyres I have on the foz, Kumho Road Venture AT51's. These tyres look aggressive and suit the forester's look well, but that's about all that's good about them... I was slightly disappointed when the foz sat in one spot spinning all 4 wheels on flat ground the first time going out in the mud for a bit of fun but even more disappointed recently after struggling in sandy mud (again, flat ground) which this car should drive on like its a bitumen road.
When these tyres eventually wear out (in a long time) I will probably replace them with a set of Kumho Road Venture MT KL71's

Did you have the right boot in deep enough?? :poke:

Seriously though, what pressures are you running during these activities? If they’re not near 20psi you’re probably not going to achieve much other than what you’ve already experienced.

Cheers

First time I think would have been at 40psi as I had only had the new wheels for a short time and didn't realize what pressures were in them, 2nd time would have been 28psi front and 26psi rear. I really need to get a good pump if i'm going to let pressures down regularly.

The AT51's, like most AT's, don't have big channels for clearing mud, so they'd just clog up like a road tyre. The KL71 would be far better at clearing mud, probably one of the better MT's. If I was to ever run two sets of tyres then I'd probably get some on my 15" rims.

Just for your own reference I was on Toyo HT tyres with 18psi on todays trip. I could get in and out of the ruts in the puddles quite easily and I only had a very little bit of diagonal wheel spin going up the steeper hill that not everyone went up. But plenty of traction for the bulk of that hill. It wasn't exactly slippery mud though...

More than a year ago now, before I got my Forester, I visited my local ARB store (no idea why) and was basically lectured by one of the staff that Subarus are bad and I should buy a real 4wd (aka one they sell parts for). I don’t think this guy expected that his “lecture” would make me want a Forester even more.
Today being a Sunday meant the store was closed so I couldn’t go find the guy but I could still take a photo.

"real" 4x4 isnt much different to a suby these days, just look at the new defender. loving the work you have put in to this so far mate! did you ever build that recycled bash plate?

The Like that I placed on the photo was late. When you posted it, it was before the site migration to XenForo.

Yes, and the locker blurs the line even more between AWD and 4x4. For me, pretty much Subaru itself has blurred the line ever since and continues to such with the newer models. It's amazing how they strike balance between fuel efficiency, road performance, reliability and off-road manners. Wait, I just said that in a forum full of Subaru owners who take their cars off-road. Oh well.

Walked in an ARB store to buy a locker for the Subi the other day. Guy seemed alright. It says on the box that it is suitable for 4wd and 2wd vehicles, so I don't think ARB as a company have anything against non Land Cruisers, it's just some individuals in some stores.Photo 1-11-19, 8 52 43 pm.jpg

You're going the same route as Dedman, cool ! Has he fixed his air leak issues ?

Yes copying Dedman. Just waiting for the worlds hardest to get circlips to arrive then it will go in the next weekend. Dedman replaced all his seals and doesn't seem to leak at all now. Can go an entire trip with out the compressor turning on. From memory the larger internal seal was a little damaged, I think/hopefully from instalation...

Installed Empire performance UEL headers this afternoon. Took a bit longer than I had expected due to a couple of uncooperative bolts but some heat sorted them out. Can definitely hear the Subaru rumble under load but need to chop off the rear muffler and weld in a bit of pipe to really make it sound good.

Now hit it with mud and then that fresh smell of burning mud, amazing :)
