Optimal Backspacing on L Series with 15" rims

I picked up some 6 bolt toyota rims that I will be using on my subaru. I'm a little worried about the backspacing on them. I threw the tape measure around a little bit the other day and it looks like I will have 1" of clearance between the rim and the body of the car. I plan on running a 235/75/r15 tire which will probably have a width of about 8-9"

What has everyone else had success running? I'll have to measure again but I think the rims came out to 5" of backspacing.

What motor, gearbox, diff ratios do you have to drive 15 inch wheels? They will have a huge inpact on braking, and acceleration.

I believe I have the 1600cc engine(non-turbo for sure), I have the selectable high/low AWD gearbox and I'm assuming I have the 3.7 gearset not the 4.1 I've heard there is.
