The auto is bullet proof, if the sports shift version. It has a separate gate to the right of D that allows manual shifting of the gears.
Also, just putting it in the RHS position puts the transmission in "learning mode" which alters the change points via the TCU when I normal mode..
Our SH has weeping head gaskets (about 0.5L/5,000 Kms), which will cost a bomb to fix.
The upmarket version has 17" alloy rims (225/55 17"), which are heavy, and the tyres are more expensive. The standard version has 215/60 16" tyres, which are noticeably more comfortable.

It is a far better family car than my 2006 SG, with much more rear seat room, but very noticeably bigger outside, with a slightly smaller luggage compartment. We have cargo barriers in both.
I FAR prefer driving my SG. It is smaller, nippier, handles better.
My wife really likes her SH.
Both my SG and the SH have the EJ253 engine, which is far better to drive than the EJ251 in your model Forester, and both have three spoke steering wheels. I personally loathe four spoke steering wheels.
