Hi All,

Having joined here in December last year, I've slowly being building my knowledge on Foresters, anticipating a purchase soon. Please be patient with me! My 80 Series Landcruiser which I've owned for 7 years was purchased to fulfil a lifelong goal to do a very remote desert crossing in central Australia, and I really enjoyed setting it up for long distance remote area travel and wrenching on it too, learning some mechanical basics. We did that with family and it was really special, and the 'Cruiser was exceedingly good out there. However, my needs and interests have evolved (devolved?!). My business now requires that I use my 'Cruiser 3 days/week in a big city (this was not anticipated) and it's like a fish out of water; enormous, cumbersome, very thirsty, doesn't fit in many places. Very very ordinary. Desert? Awesome. A Foz will be unquestionably superior 99% of travel I do from now on. I plan to camp and get to wild places on occasions to go running, cycling etc. And road trips and general hauling. I'm not interested in the whole extreme offroad thing.

I'm keen on an SG as (hopefully) the proceeds from sale of the 'Cruiser (anyone want one!? 'Tis a goodie (y);)) will allow me to purchase a decent car and have a little change for a modest refresh and some basic accessories. So, I've been hanging for a car that has had the big items done in recent times (HGs, clutch/RMS and timing belt), and boy are they rare! (I can refresh suspension/brakes/tyres and other bits myself) So many cars now of this age are being sold without RWC and with leaks or general neglect. But I've found what could be a goodie, and contacted the specialist who did the HG and asked if he used a multi-layer gasket (a la WRX), my understanding being these are my reliable/durable than the composite gaskets. His response was that they use OEM parts for the car, and thats the composite gasket and it could provide a better seal when bonding imperfect surfaces on block and heads, even after they've been cleaned, sanded, machined, levelled, tested etc... thoughts please?

Subsequently I've worked myself into a bit of lather over the HG issues generally and am feeling a bit nervous about the whole EJ253 thing. The HGs on car in question were done 20,000km ago. My ambivalence is not helped by 7 years with a staggeringly robust and reliable Landcruiser. Help me bite the bullet! Thoughts, context welcome !

Any car that age can have problems, potentially expensive ones!

Our SG just took us on a 7,000 km trip over about 5 weeks. It used no oil, water or anything else, even though I drove it like I stole it, and it was loaded to GVM (about 2,000 Kgs). Passing B-Doubles and semi-trailers at 170 kmh+, cruising on dirt and bitumen at 130 kmh. Great.

The only thing that broke was me ...
The 600+ kms on rough dirt caused me to have a brain bleed. I should have aired down, but didn't have my compressor with us.

OTOH, our SH needs the head gaskets done, as using about 0.5L every 5,000 kms. Both have done about 130,000 kms.

I run 5w-40 Shell Helix Ultra FS in both, and both have the EJ253 engine, all but identical in both. Change the oil every ~20,000 kms, 2-3 years. This oil is expensive, but lasts forever, apparently! My SG needs an oil change, but it's done about 20,000 kms and nearly four years on this last lot! The oil is slightly discoloured, but feels and smells fine.

The SH needs it's timing belt etc done, so will have the head gaskets done at the same time, to minimise overall cost.

BTW, the SG averaged about 9.5 L/100 kms over the whole trip. Pretty respectable, considering speeds, load etc.

And welcome to the forum.

Also, the 2.5L Foresters are not economical around town. Ours use about 12.5L/100 kms if mainly shopping trips and the like. If cross town type trips, then around 9L/100 kms. On the open road, at the speed limit, two passengers, no luggage, around 7.5-8 L/100 kms.

They are both brilliant cars, with the SH being a better family car, and the SG being better for any off road because it's smaller and more agile.

HTH.

Composite gaskets with just 20K klm would be just fine in my opinion. But even the youngest SG would be at least 18 YO so it is still a gamble.

and I hope your health is ok!

Thanks. Gradually coming out of convalescence.

Very, very lucky to come out of a sub-dural haematoma, followed by a further stroke and multiple sub-dural haematomas with no noticeable deficits!

I have to take Warfarin for multiple reasons, and Warfarin and brain bleeds are not a happy combination. One is 42 times more likely to have further bleeds if one is taking Warfarin.

If I stop taking Warfarin, there is little chance of surviving more than about 6 weeks. Basically, caught between the devil and the deep blue sea ...

@JimC your not mad.

If the SG is what you want to get. Get it. It sounds like a Forester is a good fit to replace your LC. And it sounds like you have done your research.

The more you google for bad news on the internet, the more you will find.

And the more confused you will become.
I had a manual SG for 10 years, still had original engine untouched, suspension etc., only replaced radiator & DM flywheel (Warranty) and the normal wear & tear items like tyres brake pads etc.

Well I've finally purchased a car! Have spent 3 months searching and inspecting SGs locally. It's been a rollercoaster, with most vehicles in average to poor condition. Staggered at the number of buyers oblivious to quite evident mechanical problems on their cars. I guess most people buying these do so as they are inexpensive and robust, and that leads to poor maintenance and neglect, but the old buses just keep rolling anyway.

I found a 1 owner, FSH '06 SG2 manual, neat and clean, body work very good. Clutch pick up is a little high, and rear wheel bearings getting a bit noisy, they'll probably need doing in a year or so, but the head gaskets were done on this car, and it was the best example I'd seen. Paid $1k more than I had intended, but I'm really pleased. Pick up next week.
