spent 2 weeks of the September school holidays driving up to Newman, Tom Price and around Karijini.
I was a bit unprepared for the amount of offroading we did as I had planned to be in Karijini only but ended up doing tracks in the other towns
In Newman we went along the 3 pools track for a bit then turned back as we thought we were lost. It was just me,wife and kids with no phone reception so thought better of it as the ascent up hills were rutted and rocky and there was nobody else around (pic3).
We next took the track to Kalgan's Pool which is famous for a couple of looong water crossings about 50cm high. Again we chickened out as the foz is running a cold air intake but spent a few hours chilling at the crossing which was very nice in itself (pic 1) . There was refreshing running water to cool off and everyone else kept on going to Kalgan's pool so we had the place to ourselves.
Spent a couple of nights in Tom Price where we took the track to the top of Mt Nameless which was pretty easy (pic2). There is a sign at the start of the track warning it's for 4WD only.
Inside Karijini NP there are heavily corrugated unsealed roads. It rattled so much the wiring came loose on my rear view camera and both front speakers. My roofracks also came loose and shifted a few inches . I actually didn't notice that until we got back to Perth.
The old foz did very well considering a lot of Ks were done with 91 RON fuel. The turbo certainly didn't like it but 95 was hard to come by in the remote towns.
I am very impressed with the Cooper ATT tyres. Very quiet and grippy onroad and capable offroad.
