Ahh ... I've doubtless told this story before. We will go back in time to 2005 when my red Forester was practically brand new. I was on a club trip (not a car club, bird watchers) up the Mallee in north-western Victoria. One morning we all piled into vechicles, 4 people in each one, to head off into the Sunset Country. The leader for the day informed us that this was awkward country so it would be 4WD-only. Well, we filled up all the Nisan Patrols and Land Cruisers and the like, and there were 2 people left over, me and another bloke. So I said I'd take my Forester.
Oh no, "You need a proper 4WD" they said, you'll get bogged or worse.
Eventually, they agreed that I could come along but go last and I promised to stop and turn around as soon as the going got difficult. So off we went, and a good day was had by all. Saw some great birds, nobody had any trouble.
Afterwards one of the other drivers came up to me and said "Gosh, I was so impressed by that litte Subaru of yours. Wow! It handled everything!"
I didn't spoil his day by saying anything, just mumbled "Oh, thanks" or something. The point was - and I tactfuly didn't say this - the tracks we'd spent the day on were very, very easy. There wasn't one of them I wouldn't have happily driven in my grandmother's Barina - and that's with her as a passenger. "Handled everything"? Strewth, there wasn't any bloody thing to handle. You could have done those tracks in any registerable, roadworthy vehicle made, and this dipstick thought they needed his Patrol. Sigh.
