I had to tow my 2005 MY06 Forester to the repairer today because it can't get into any gear despite cleaning the working slave cylinder and bleeding the cluth fluid. Repairer thinks the cluth release fork is the culpit.
Anyway, I felt that the tow truck had been trying to persuade me not to repair the car by kept on saying "it could be a very costly repair", "how much do you think your car worth"...
When the car reached the repairer, the tow truck driver gave me his card and told me to message him if I decided not to go ahead with the repair and he will pay me AUS600 to buy my car de-registered.
I still took his card but I am not selling my car for AUS600 as I think my car worth more than that - even the repairer thinks it worth more than AUS600 too!

Depends on the buyer. My Foz is probably A$4-5K but the accessories are worth as much as the car! (Bullbar, rear bar and carriers, custom suspension, rear drawers, dual battery etc etc)

My insurer (not known for their generosity!) reckons my MY06 2006 Forester is worth about $7,000.

In the market, with 120,000 kms on the clock, and no accessories, they sell for considerably more than that ...

Like Kevin, my OEM Liberty tow bar, SubaXtreme sump guard and roo bar would cost me about another $3,000 or so.

Depends how much it is worth to YOU.
I can see no reason at all to sell mine. If some enthusiast offered me, perhaps, $10k I probably would but why? It does everything I ask it to and it is still much more cost effective to repair than fork out 40 or 50 K to replace.
Yours is certainly worth much more than $600.......

The stand out is that the MY06 cars are much more expensive than the MY05 models.

That's in line with my thoughts about the relative value.
Interesting to know...mine is MY06 :D although I'm NOT selling yet.
Just got the phone call from the repairer that the car is ready to pick up. All up $950 but that includes replacing the bearings too as the quote on replacing the fork was $600 for just labour, plus labour costs on flushing the manual transmission oil, diff oil and overhauling the power steering systems (replacing both hoses, O ring and the fluid)

What bearings did they replace?

The $600 is typically the going rate for a scrap car in decent shape. He might have been hoping to score a car with an issue that he knew he could repair cheaply to the flip for a few thousand profit. I’m sure it happens all the time in that field of work.

And I’m sure there are many people that would take him up on that offer thinking the car IS actually toast/not worth repairing. We live in such a disposable society that ppl are upgrading their cars because the satnav or interactive system can’t be further upgraded and thus it is redundant which makes the rest of the car the same! It’s happening in the US as they shut off their 3G network.

As for my car… priceless!!

And I agree with Ratbag - insurance companies definitely have their version of values and then there’s reality… and reality usually dictates that you can’t buy like for like if you need to replace the vehicle in the event of a crash.

Cheers

Haven't been online for a while sorry guys.

The bearing that works with the clutch fork...not too sure where it is. He did said it seems ok but replaced it for just in case (I wished he had replaced the fork when the clutch was replaced 2 years ago).

No way I'm selling my car for $600. In case it costed me more to fix it, I would've sold the car for parts and I'm sure I can get more than $600.

Now that the car is fixed, I'm happy to drive it for as long as it last or when my situation changed next :)

Also I saw a very nice looking lifted Outback (maybe 2015 or later version) in a shopping center the other day; I'm dreaming doing this to my Forester
