Rear diff oil change, switch tool?

Hey All,

Im planning to change the rear diff oil per scheduled maintenance. Can i crack the filler and drain plugs with a 1/2" ratchet?

Or do I need a special tool?
 
You will run the risk of rounding it off. You need a 13mm square tool. Undo the top plug first just to make sure you can refill it.
 
Good timing - I just cracked open the rear differential on my '12 Forester last week. It was TIGHT.

My 1/2" breaker bar wasn't enough, and it was on the verge of rounding it off. I found a big bolt bolt extractor that fit. Then I used my breaker bar and a 3-foot cheater to open my differential.

Next time I may just find a 13mm square tool...
