the basket I was looking at (see earlier post) has been out of stock long term.
Found this one, 1600x1000 , weighs around 10kg. Load rating 80kg.
Can't find any reviews on this basket.
I know it won't be the best quality but I'm only using to to carry camping gear a few times a year and I don't leave the basket on the roof permanently.
I'm concerned about the strength of the black plastic mouldings and how well it will hold up to ratchet straps
what do you all think?

As long as it's ABS plastic it should be OK I reckon.

I've seen some really strong ABS stuff around.

Using it not that often it will be perfectly fine there. Depends how thick that plastic is it could be very strong
This or just look for some rooftop cargo carier box

Those rooftop cargo carriers appear quite flimsy to me, but they're reasonably light and people appear to stuff quite a lot in them.
If I ever put a roof tray(?) on my car, it will probably be modified from one of the old security screen doors I've got lying around. :)

Well they supose to be light thats why , all purpose is to have box there that can carry some light stuff in it covered from sun rain and thats fine i think i will buy one too when will find some cheap used one. I think those are great for all that camping gear even tents sleeping bags etc. Makes your trunk usable for other stuff

Yes, great for protecting your stuff from the elements I agree. I probably would have bought one myself years ago If I didn't need the space for the Lifesaving boards. Not sure how well one would fare on the really rough stuff though.

roof boxes are too small for what I carry. 10 man tent + groundsheet + bedding for 4 people , maybe a kids bike.

yh it depends what everyone needs. i found i still can sleep in car when some stuff put in front , but i could put them in that box on roof and even on rain wouldnt have any probs. so its depends. they can fit there a lot stuff.

Found the same basket on Aliexpress and I was right about the quality of the plastic. So it's a pass on

Just weld one from steel tubes then.

They may appear that way but they're quite solid once shut. I did Cape York in 2005 with my Thule roof box; carried a spare up there along with all sorts of stuff. You'd be surprised how much they hold

i think if you need to put most soft stuff and light stuff in roof basket that plastic is just better way to do it ... im still gonna try it but i would do it on roof rack .. i mean that roof bag on my roof rack with hil ift jack thats how i would do it , but most ppl just choosing that alone roof box not roof rack because its just so good , its good on wind in highway too. its super light, and its pretty strong rly. as its not plastic there anyway..
