Towbar wiring for forester

Hey all. I’m struggling with wiring up a 7 pin towbar connector on my forester and need some help. The plug in back of car has 9 wires (into a 10 pin plug) and I’m unsure what some of the car-side wires are for. Checking with my mulitmeter I have,

pin positions:
1 2 3 4 5
6 7 8 9 10

Pin 1 – Red wire/yellow stripe –rear lights
Pin 2 – Purple wire – rear lights
Pin 3 – White wire/black stripe – brake lights
Pin 4 – Black wire/green stripe – left indicator
Pin 5 – Green wire/white stripe – right indicator
Pin 6 – Green wire/black stripe
Pin 7 - Black wire
Pin 8 – Black wire
Pin 9 – Vacant
Pin 10 - Blue wire/red stripe – always live at 12V

Some of the connections seem obvious (hopefully) ie. indicators and brake lights. Questions are:
Assuming (?) black is earth, why are there 2?
What is pin 10? (Auxillary?)
What is pin 6?
Why are there 2 wires for lights?

I just checked mine out.

The colours all match up to yours on the subaru side.

The pins that they connect to are in my case for the standard subaru 7 pin connector are :

Pin 1 - Brown
Pin 2 - Brown
Pin 3 - Red - Brake
Pin 4 - Yellow - L Turn
Pin 5 - Green - R Turn
Pin 6 -
Pin 7 - White
Pin 8 - White
Pin 9 -
Pin 10 -

One of the whites is earth, I think one is reverse or auxiliary.
The Brown There is one for electric brakes and one for tail and rego lights.


There was a blue and black wire in the wire ribbon that they didn't use which, would have been good so it matched diagrams like this.

Not exactly sure of the pins but it gives you an idea on which ones are used.
