Anyone know how compatible ECUs are between automatic & manual?
From the limited reading I've done, the automatic version can be remapped to manual..
The two I have have the same connectors, but are different part numbers:
this is the manual from MY05 (09/04 on the plate):

And this is the Auto one from an MY04 (01/04 on the plate)

Is it worth me keeping the Automatic ECU and remapping it for use as a spare?
Any idea how I'd remap it? I'm guessing it's not a DIY job!

what is the desired goal ?
if you supply more details i can help you out (e.g. 'I have a auto fozzy that i swapped to manual and need an ECU')
Generally speaking most of these model years the same ECU works for both AT and MT transmissions, all you do is add a pin to the ECU connect it to ground and remove the AT pins that communicate between the TCU and ECU. (remapping with non turbo cars is more of a specialty and off the shelf hardware like the TACTRIX cable do not support them)

what is the desired goal ?
To keep the ECU from my parts car (MY04 Automatic) for use as a spare for my MY05 Manual Forester, should I fritz it.
From what you've said it's entirely doable.
Thanks for asking!

does the MY04 Automatic have a factory immobilizer ?

does the MY04 Automatic have a factory immobilizer ?
Yes it does, But I've got a key so if the immobilizer bit can't be flashed for my current keys it's not a major problem.
It's funny, I mess around with electronics a bit for my work, if I had access to the firmware that would probably be one of the few electronic things on the car I'd be happy to mess with.
Just a matter of making up a cable and getting the right software to do it with. :)

I had a chipped key made for Roo2. I also have a standard key in a keytainer. The latter will open the door using the lock barrel, but will not start the car, of course.

I think that you need the keys and the immobilizer unit link to Iwire Immobilizer guide
last is go through the wiring diagrams between the two different model years to see if no ECU pins have moved or changed

hmmm... according to that article, seeing as both were built in 2004 (one at the beginning and one at the end) that means they aren't immobilised.
or is mine (9/2004) considered a 2005 model? The MY thing always confuses me.

9/2004 will be MY05, because the "MY" seems to tick over at the beginning of the financial year, 01 July.

9/2004 will be MY05,
So my 2004 forester is a 2005 forester.
And if my 2004 forester was built a month earlier, in 2003 it would be a 2004 forester.

Sorry I was just referencing the article for the logic of the system (that the little black immobilizer box and the ECU are linked) as the article's model years are relevant only for USDM.

As much as Subaru's are similar there many changes between US and EU/AUS markets some subtle some major.
here is a interesting one, the American cars have a clutch interlock for starting the engine EU cars don't, I guess Subaru realized EU drivers are better with manual trans and don't need an extra safety feature

No need to be sorry!
I'm thinking all the AUDM models of the SG all have immobilisers. They have the same keys at least..!
