Popped up to see my mate yesterday, and took the shortcut home.
Best condition I've ever seen the 4wd section of Black Mountain Road, could probably have done it in a standard car. I doubt the SVX would have made it because of the dips, would bottom out at the top of them and then dig the nose into the dirt at bottom..
here's a short clip showing the transition from Mowbray National Park to Kuranda National Park (you can see the signs)

I don't know if you can see the thin palm like plants on the side of the road.. they're called 'wait a while' because they throw out huge tendril things that are full of spikes. If you end up in some of that, all you can do is wait a while until someone comes along and cuts you out. They've killed people.

And then... a bonus! somone's bent the gates blocking access down Quaid road to Cook highway so much they can't be closed again (I'm guessing meatheads in big 4wds put snatch straps on it and pulled until it broke the lock by the looks of it).

This is the end, coming onto cook highway

Saves a ton of time getting to my friends place, probably about an hour off the trip!
Back Story:
" Quaid Road is also known as Southedge Road and is strange for a number of reasons. It is a bitumen road put in from Wangetti to a proposed rural subdivision, (complete with massive lake), in the 1990s by the developer George Quaid (who also subdivided the Daintree with help fom the Minister for everything Russ Hinze)...."
more here for those interested
and even more here! He was a prety dodgy bugger, but then there's a lot of them up here that still wish they had someone like Joh in power now.

Funniest thing was passing someone coming the other way up it! wasn't expecting that...

Edit #428 sorry about the quality. youtube downgraded it to SD :( plus the light was a bit low (6pm at night)

Haven't got the spotties aligned correctly yet since I spread them out. Probably do that tomorrow in the Bunnings car park while waiting for daughter to finish work. Some sort of lightbar on the roof wouldn't be a bad thing in these closed in roads, if I could get one at a pleasant colour temperature.

Thanks for sharing, @Ben Up North. I like the tropical forest run.

The 2nd footage for me is a good one because, even though you said the spotties weren't aligned yet, it demonstrates the performance of lights with the correct colour temperature and CRI. I am a fan of those made in OZ LightForce lamps.

The name Daintree got me triggered. I would like to visit Daintree and get my own in situ Cretaceous fossils there. I am not sure if the QLD government would allow that, though. Perhaps there is a section where it's allowed but I doubt it.

😲 😱 🤬

Take only pictures, leave only footprints.
(Unless it is endemic, then you might get a permit if you're lucky)
Wherever you go. Unless it's, like, a shop.

This is true anywhere, actually.

I am able to get permits for some volcanic and sedimentary host rocks here and overseas but only for research purposes. I doubt the QLD government will allow fossils to be taken from Daintree forest unless I am doing something scientifically revolutionary, haha.
