at what intervals do you need to replace timing belt on a 2010 forester

It'll be in your Owner's Manual. If it's still the EJ253, it's 125,000km in Australia. If it's the later FB/FA engines, they are chain driven

I think it's the EJ as the FB came later in 2010. The belt change is 100K miles in the USA so I do not see why it should not be the same here.

When mine was changed in the 2006 SG at about 112,500 kms (or whatever when service interval arrived), the old one looked brand new.

In my experience, it's not usually the belt that snaps, but rather one of the bearings that wears out and fails, that then causes the belt to fail. Every belt I've done in a EJ subaru (I've done several now) the bearings had internal wear (i.e grinding when spinning) at the service interval.

@Kevin there was a reason behind the earlier service interval in Australia, I can't remember it off the top of my head though

More money for dealers? ;)

There's really no logical reason why it should be any different; same car, same engine etc etc

Similar conditions in other countries.as well. I have never seen the difference convincingly justified.
Well, whole lots of manufacturers use Oz as a testing/proving ground. Must be some reason for it, I guess.
