So i want to extended breathers on my diff but i was thinking, why waste my time setting up the open diff with breathers when down the road, i would like some kindve of locker in the rear. So my question is which SG Forester had the LSD in the rear, and does it have to be strictly from an SG or can i use from others??

So my question is which SG Forester had the LSD in the rear,
All of them as far as I know, at least in Australia.
You'd have to get a R160 from an imprezza/outback to put an auto locker in it (i.e torq locker).
Or (and many say much much better) get an R180 from a WRX (some Nissans as well I believe) and get a proper locker in it :) - but then you'd want do the front diff too, which means while you've got the gearbox apart to do that you may as well install a dccd and play with the gearing a bit!

edit #457: for what it's worth, I haven't needed a locker in my Forester yet, the LSD has been enough.

i thought only the XS models had the LSD in them. Maybe its not worth the hastle then, but good knowledge to have none the less. Im just about done with upgrades and accessories :)

Nope. Standard across the board in Oz.
Autos have a different ratio is the only difference I believe.
The XTs would probably be different too, just, because.

Agree with others - all SG models have the rear viscous LSD.

And yes, it works! And works well.

BUT, because of the way vLSDs work, it's almost impossible to catch them at it ... :lol1:.

The vLSD in my SG9 forester is decent, coming from an SF forester before that with open rear diff I can tell you it makes world of difference. Just watch out for symmetrical & non symmetrical drive shaft setup because you might end up with the wrong diff for the shafts you have.

think im just going to skip it ive already got the vLSD, rear breather mod this weekend it would seem gents

A new viscous LSD is ok offroad but older ones generally don't work very well anymore & are barely any better than an open diff
Depending on how far you want to push it offroad, there is a locker available now. Brilliant offroad, but clicks on tight corners onroad. I don't mind it but some people aren't a fan

Video of the locker in action vs viscous LSD rear diff vs open rear diff.
All cars have the same centre diff (factory 4kg) & same front diff (open):

NL, the rear vLSD is no more likely to 'wear out' than is the centre vLSD. Under anything approximating normal use, both will last the lifetime of the vehicle, and continue to function well for that time.

After 240,000+ kms, the centre vLSD in Roo1 was still working perfectly.

Mechanical LSDs need periodic adjustment and will break if ill-treated. If they don't break when ill-treated, they will cause other parts to break.

NOTHING lasts forever ... Not even billion dollar Mars rovers ...
