Dear friends,

Greetings from Spain! I´m typing you because I´m going to buy one Forester MY2015 2.0 Diesel engine, but I have a very big doubt concerning the gearbox. I´ll run around 25000 to 30000 km per year/that´s why I chose the diesel), 75% on the road the rest off road.

One the one hand, I´ve seen one unit with manual 6 speed transmission, with the central viscosus differencial. I prefer the manual transmission rather than Lineartronic CVT, but I have read that the manual gearbox has a very large 1st gear, so sometimes the clutch can suffer while off roading and that´s something that afraids me a lot. The manual gearbox is also equiped with the viscosus differential VSLD while the Lineartronic uses the muti gear differential, I don´t know if there is a very big difference between them (I know the theory but I´m not sure with the practise), I think the biggest different while off roading is the much lower range for the first gear with the automatic gearbox.

The Lineatronic that I´ve seen is 3.5k Euros more expensive than the manual one with same equipment. I´m not pretty sure if it´s worth to pay that much or I can go for the manual gearbox (The manual is 17.000 Euros and the Lineartronic is 20.500)

Can anyone suggest me? Does anyone have the manual gearbox?

Thank so much for your support!

Take care

The diesel has a lot of torque but no low range. For soft offroading, both gearboxes should be fine. I would go 6mt because its cheaper to fix a clutch....

Manu thanks for the suggestion. Should I look any special point in the vehicule related to its reliability? Any weakness?

diesels are braking up to certain year , but those first years are most like brake if you push it to offroad. plenty cars with broken engines here.

Thanks for the answer. I saw that problems came up to 2010, is that true? I'm talking about 2015 model

2015 should be fine. If you buy it at a Subaru dealership, ask for a 1 year warranty at least.

@jpemolina
I can understand the reason that someone would want to buy a diesel, after all as well as my Foz I have a 2.5L diesel Mitsubishi Triton / L200. However I would never buy a diesel Subaru as there are just too many problems. Definitely do not buy if your daily travel is short, even Subaru do not recommend for short city travel due to DPF issues. Some diesel Foresters are now having stalling problems because of faulty timing chains; A$2,700 to fix.

Have a read here before you buy: EE20 - 2.0L Diesel

Kevin thanks for the reply. In fact I'm going to do around 150 km each time I drive it (4-5 times a week). The model I'm talking about is the pre face-lift 2015, complying with the Euro 6. Most issues are related to 2010 model right? I tried to find liability issues in Spain, but nearly all say that it's a very reliable car

150 klm would be fine for the diesel. If you review the threads in the link I provided you will see issues up to and including 2015.

Hello Kevin, yes I saw some of them the majority concerning the DPF as you said, now you´re scaring me with the diesel jeje... the thing is that the discontance is going to be high, if not of course I´d have chosen the petrol engine (in fact I have a Golf GTI in home also)... hmm difficult

Yes, it is a difficult decision that's why I wanted you to be aware of any issues "before" you buy ;) Every vehicle has it's issues but when the manufacturer stops making that vehicle, or engine in this case, it gives plenty to think about for sure!
