So what are my options for exhaust when going off road? I would like to have a nice little purr to it, you know not too loud and not to soft kindve tone. What do people recommend and whats the go on power output with this stuff, does it make minor or major impacts to performance and where in the range?

Cheers Egg

The OEM muffler was slowly dissolving on my 2004 SG, so I got the muffler guys to put something a less restrictive on it, a 'sports exhaust' . Doesn't seem to have made any noticeable difference apart from a nicer, deeper tone. It's a bit smaller in size than the original, and it seems to be tucked up a bit more than the original. Theoretically the car should have a bit more power (or in my case, run a little cooler too)
If you want the wrx burble, you'll need to put unequal length headers on it.

Doesn't sound as good as the flat six in my SVX though. ;)

how much they sting you for that and was it any particular brand??

I never even heard of a SVX, just did a quick google search and im like what is thaaaat haha

"That" is a very kool Subie ;) About A$70-80k+ when new!

I got cat back a few years ago for about $800 I think - I'll have to check. Included new free flow cat and resonator muffler.

I had a look but can't find the invoice which is odd as I have kept all records of the vehicle since new. Just be careful to not go too loud as the droning on a long trip can be very uncomfortable.

Ill have a shop around see what u get. I know the local bloke does good jobs and is very popular and recommended

Whatever you get you will want it tucked up out of the way. The replacement cat on mine is much smaller than OEM.

When I damaged my centre muffler on my SG, I had it replaced with a torpedo type one. Smaller, tougher, more streamlined.

Nah. Bog standard. I got modifying vehicles out of my system about 40+ years ago ...

Last serious modifications were to my 1968 Landcruiser [edit] in the mid 1970s [end edit]. Fitted it with twin 1.75 inch SU carbies after designing and building the manifold myself.

That having been said, my SG has a SubaXtreme sump guard and roo bar, plus a couple of other bits and pieces. Works very well for me.

I remember Subaru saying something about tucking the exhaust system way up to benefit off-road performance. This was when they just advertised the 8.7" of stock ground clearance around 2008 to 2009. Even the axle-back muffler is much more tucked up that our SGs. After 2008 to 2009, the bumper is higher because of the tucked-up muffler, exposing the rear axle more. Cheers.
