I'm just back home after a month of driving a 'short half lap' of eastern Australia. Basically Melbourne, Echuca, Hillston, Bourke, St George (where I picked up my big sister), then Mitchell, Barcaldine, Winton, Cloncurry, Mt Isa, Camooweal,Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon via the Mereenie loop, Yulara, Curtin Springs, Marla, Woomera, Clare, Narrandera, Canberra (where I left my big sister), then Milawa and finally back to Melbourne. We stayed in caravan park cabins mostly, some roadhouses, and a few motels.
The stats:
Total distance about 8900 km, 780l petrol, gives 8.8 lt/100km. Time taken just over a month.
The old Outback ran faultlessly, I had no trouble with tyres (Bridgestone Ecopia 225/60-16), no oil used etc etc. I covered maybe 300km of gravel roads including the Mereenie loop. (I forgot to air down, and when I remembered I couldn't be bothered stopping, so the tyres stayed at 40psi and although the ride was a bit harsh the car rode the corrugations just fine).
I'm sorry that this is a boring, drama free report. The trip was far from boring, but otherwise drama free.
