Well, after 10 years the missus' Golf has too many problems to bother with so its up for sale.

From one quirky car to the next, we have just purchased a Freelander 2 TD4 SE. Don't worry, I've still got my Forester and it is still my offroad beast. The Landy is just a safe city car for the family. Looking forward to trying it out on some tracks though.

.....and yes! I do have concerns about the reliability of the brand - i.e. one of the worst in the world but I have done a lot of research and found that this is one of the most reliable models they have made. The interior is a very nice place to be. The 4wd system is second to none, the clearance at 210mm is adequate for most things but are a limiting factor. There are lift kits around though.

Nice - a shame someone scribbled all over the number plate with texta though

Wow ! And why not another Forester ?

Probably because his other half was concerned that if @Tweaksta gets another Forester for her, she would wake up one day with another off-road Subaru in the garage!

During my younger and more hardcore 4x4 years, I was intrigued by the first-gen Freelander, especially when it ran the Camel Trophy. It performed well alongside Defenders and Discoveries. Our off-road Subaruing is actually comparable to it: unibody, lower ground clearance, smaller engine but good enough.

She had always told me that Foresters aren't quirky enough for her.....

I did however, convince her to get an XV. The thing is, a decent low km XV is about 15k. The Freelander was already in the family, and only has 69k kms on it. Plus we got it for a price we couldn't refuse. The plan is, that if the Freelander breaks or costs us anywhere near the amount that breaks the bank then we sell it and get her the XV

For anyone else “considering” the landrover brand in future, namely from the second hand market, do your research! The maintenance schedule at 100,000km is full on and I’ve been told it involves removing the body for most models.

Due to this you’ll be seeing second hand range rovers popping up “very cheap” for what they appear to be as the owners try to offload them for a new unit. Labour money is dead money compared to depreciation to these well off people I guess!
Tweaksta - looks like a good unit mate. And buying from family always helps with your confidence if you already know the vehicle when brand swapping!

Cheers

Bennie
